Join Our Expert Urology Team at Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust!

We are excited to offer an opportunity for a Consultant Urological Surgeon based at Southend University Hospital, part of our dynamic and forward-thinking Urology service.

You’ll be joining a department that has recently redesigned its pathways to deliver outstanding patient care across three sites under a single clinical and management structure. This role involves general urology duties, including day case surgery, transurethral procedures, and the option to develop an Endourology subspecialty.

Our Southend site is the regional complex Urology cancer centre, equipped with two Da Vinci robotic systems, while Chelmsford also boasts robotic capability. Complex stone, andrology, and paediatric urology are based at Broomfield, ensuring a diverse and collaborative environment.

We offer:

  • Emergency lithotripter service and combined Southend/Broomfield rota
  • Advanced BPH treatments: HoLEP, TURIS TURP, Rezum, UroLift, PAE
  • Comprehensive haematuria clinics and prostate diagnostics, including local anaesthetic transperineal biopsies

On-call is 1:11 prospective, supported by 24/7 middle-grade cover and a separate pelvic oncology rota. Our consultant-of-the-week system ensures elective work pauses during on-call weeks for better work-life balance.

Main duties of the job

Please see below and overview of the main duties entailed within the role:

To provide outpatient urology clinic services; this may include minor procedures

To perform independent elective and emergency operating including day case surgery

To undertake speciality clinics and participate as a core member in Urology MDTs.

Any responsibility which relates to a special interest;

Professional supervision and management of junior medical staff including the observance of local employment and human resource policies and procedures;

To provide consultant level Urology on call duties (1 in 11). This will include on site daytime cover and post take ward round, and to contribute to the pelvic urology on call rota.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or Equivalent
  • Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via certificate of Completion of Training (CCT) or CESR (CP) – proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview
  • FRCS (Urol) or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • ATLS certificate

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of thorough and broad training and experience in the specialty. Essential to have robotic prostate fellowship experience
  • Comprehensive knowledge in the specialty and ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems
  • Demonstrates good knowledge of the structures and culture of the NHS, roles, responsibilities and relationships across the MDT and the multi-professional team
  • Able to take full and independent responsibility for delivering service without direct supervision.
Desirable criteria
  • Subspecialist interest in bladder cancer and General Urology

Teaching Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge and experience of supervising undergraduates, junior doctors and other staff
  • Ability to teach clinical skills
Desirable criteria
  • Postgraduate qualification

Research/Audit Experience

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of the principles of research/audit and ability to interpret and apply clinical research.
  • Evidence of Audit
  • Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
Desirable criteria
  • Recent published clinical research in peer reviewed journal
  • Ability to supervise postgraduate research
  • Masters or PhD qualification

Communication/Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Ability to develop effective working relationships on an individual and multi-disciplinary basis with all levels of staff
  • Ability to communicate effectively with clinical colleagues, other specialties and support staff
  • Ability to manage and lead department
  • Ability to adapt and respond to changing circumstances
