Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.
Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

Job overview
Mid and South Essex NHS Trust's Surgery Department are are looking for Clinical Fellows to join our General Surgery teams on a fixed-term full time basis, contracted until 30th September 2026.
Are you post core surgical training (or equivalent) or more senior looking to obtain further complex operative experience, prior to taking up a consultant post.
Your duties will be arranged with the Consultant to whom you are responsible, who has final medical responsibility for all
patients under his/her care.
Main duties of the job
Supporting the consultants and FY1 to ST2 level doctors in delivering in-patient care within this busy and forward-thinking department.
The provision of Surgical Services within the Hospital with responsibility for the prevention, assessment, diagnosis, and treatment of illness within the surgical department.
Close working with medical, nursing and allied health professionals to assist in providing high quality patient care.
Taking clinical responsibilities and be placed on the on-call rota only after the supervising consultant deems them competent to do so.
Meeting with the educational supervisor to discuss personal development plans within the first six weeks of commencing the post.
Performing Operations and Assisting in Theatres.
Responsibility for continuity of care for patients on the ward.
The expected on call rota will be 1 in 13 shift system.

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCS or equivalent
- Full Registration with the General Medical Council
Desirable criteria
- FRCS (Plas) or equivalent
Knowledge and Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous experience at Clinical Fellow ST3 or equivalent level
- At least 2 years of core surgical training or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- Ability to develop and maintain a sub-specialty interest
Communication Skills
Essential criteria
- Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of staff, patients and relatives.
- Ability to work as part of a multi-disciplinary team with appropriate interpersonal skills for effective team working.
Audit and Clinical Governance
Essential criteria
- Interest in, and knowledge of medical audit and understands the principles of evidence-based audit.
- An understanding of the principles of Clinical Governance.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of audit participation Standards High ethical/professional standards
