We are seeking a dynamic and motivated Consultant Psychiatrist to join our Adult Liaison service based at Southend Hospital. This is an exciting opportunity to play a key role in providing high-quality person-centred Mental health care.

 

 

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will be responsible for providing clinical leadership for the assessment and management of adult patients 18 years to 70 years old admitted to Southend Hospital.  The post holder will be the Responsible Clinician for patients detained under the Mental Health Act to Southend Hospital. The team benefits from an experienced consultant in Old Age Psychiatry who would be a supportive colleague of the holder of this post. The post holder is required to be on the specialist register for General Adult Psychiatry (other sub-specialties may be considered in exceptional circumstances).

 

You must have full GMC registration and be on the Specialist Register, with an appropriate CCT or equivalent or be within six months of obtaining your CCT on the date of the AAC.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

 

  • Provide clinical leadership and be the Responsible Clinician for the General Adult patients referred to the Liaison team.
  • Review new patients in a timely manner and oversee the clinical management of patients on the wards.
  • Will be available for timely CPA meetings and facilitate discharge planning.
  • Carry out duties as Responsible Clinician, including Mental Health Act assessments, preparation of tribunal reports and giving oral evidence at manager’s hearings and mental health review tribunals(if required).
  • Be actively involved in supporting staff development and in effecting continual service improvement.
  • Provide clinical supervision to the trainees.
  • Clinical Audit: The post holder will participate in audit to ensure the continuous improvement of the service.
  • The old age Liaison services has an experienced full time consultant psychiatrist .The post holder will only be expected to provide cover for holidays and absences.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MB BS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Registration with the General Medical Council and on the Specialist Register.
  • Meets Royal College of Psychiatrists criteria for appointment to the post of Consultant.
  • Section 12 Approval and Approved Clinician Status.
Desirable criteria
  • Qualification or higher degree in medical education, clinical research or management.
  • MRCPsych
  • On the Specialist Register with qualifications General Adult CCT with experience in Liaison Psychiatry.
  • Postgraduate degree in psychiatry MRC Psych or equivalent.
  • Additional clinical qualifications.

Eligibility

Essential criteria
  • Fully registered with the GMC with a licence to practice at the time of appointment.
  • Included on the GMC Specialist Register OR within six months.
  • Approved clinician status.
  • Approved under Section 12.
Desirable criteria
  • In good standing with GMC with respect to warning and conditions on practice.

Clinical skills, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Able to manage clinical complexity and uncertainty.
  • Makes decisions based on evidence and experience including the contribution of others
  • Able to meet duties under MHA and MCA.
Desirable criteria
  • Wide range of specialist and sub-specialist experience relevant to post within NHS or comparable service.
  • Utilises a quality improvement approach to think systemically about complex problems, develop potential change ideas and test these in practice using a systematic QI methodology.
