The Job Role

The primary role of the Acute Physician is to provide early patient management decisions with support from junior medical staff, a dedicated nursing team, procedural support practitioners and a rapid-response social and therapy team. The successful candidate will work within the Acute Medical Service (AMS) and contribute to a team of 7.5 WTE Consultants in Acute Medicine.

We are looking for a Consultant Acute Physician to join our Medicine Directorate to deliver ways of working that ensure increased consultant input and continuity in the acute medical pathway. Our post includes working in our newly developed Short Stay Unit and SDEC Unit to deliver a service dedicated to good quality patient care.

As the successful candidate you will join our Acute Physician team with the opportunity to be involved in further developing our Acute Medical Units consisting of:-

  • Our new Short Stay Unit which consists of 30 beds and offers high end acute medical care to patients promptly with discharge back to the community quickly.
  • An Assessment Ward  with 25 beds
  • And a 7 day Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).

As the successful candidate you will join our Acute Physician team with the opportunity to be involved in further developing our Acute Medical Units consisting of:-

  • Our new Short Stay Unit which consists of 30 beds and offers high end acute medical care to patients promptly with discharge back to the community quickly.
  • An Assessment Ward  with 25 beds
  • And a 7 day Same Day Emergency Care Unit (SDEC).

In addition we offer you the opportunity to pursue a special interest within other medical specialities as well the opportunity to be involved in our transformation programme across Southend, Mid Essex, Basildon and Thurrock.

The Acute Medical Unit are proud to be able to offer a personalised supportive induction programme for all newly appointed Consultants which is tailored to the candidate’s needs. This includes a welcome tour, time to complete statutory/mandatory training, time to integrate into the team at a pace that suits the candidate and a tailored programme in line with any additional requests. We include regular reviews and opportunities to flex the induction programme as required. 

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Full GMC registration
  • MRCP (or equivalent)
  • Inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register for GIM or Acute Medicine or within 6 months of inclusion at the time of interview.
  • Clinical training and experience equivalent to that required for gaining UK CCT in GIM or Acute Medicine.

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Substantial experience in general medicine

Ability (Clinical)

Essential criteria
  • Ability to offer expert clinical opinion on range of problems both emergency and elective within the specialty.
  • Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients.

Ability (IT)

Essential criteria
  • Basic keyboard skills/knowledge of Microsoft packages

  • High ethical/professional standards

Personality

Essential criteria
  • Good Leadership skills
  • Ability to communicate effectively with colleagues, patients, relatives, GPs, nurses & other agencies.
