Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust is the only acute hospital provider in the Mid and South Essex Integrated Care System (ICS), which is a system of health and care partners working together for our local population.

Within Mid and South Essex there are 149 GP practices, operating from over 200 sites, forming 27 Primary Care Networks and one Ambulance Trust. There are also three main community and mental health service providers who work together through a community collaborative.

We collaborate with other valuable partners, including three Healthwatch organisations, nine voluntary and community sector organisations and three top tier local authorities, with seven district, borough and city councils, as well as our local universities.

We are now seeking an experienced and inspiring Principal Pharmacist – Specialist Medicine, based at our Southend site, who embodies these values and is passionate about delivering outstanding, patient‑centred pharmacy services.

As one of two Specialist Medicine pharmacy leads within the Trust, this senior clinical leadership role will see you providing expert pharmacy input within Specialist Medicine services, working collaboratively with multidisciplinary teams to improve patient outcomes, promote medicines safety, and support high-quality care across the Trust.

Main duties of the job

  • Deliver excellent specialist clinical pharmacy care, ensuring safe, effective, and evidence-based use of medicines.
  • Lead and develop specialist pharmacy services, driving continuous improvement and innovation.
  • Work compassionately with patients, families, and carers, recognising individual needs and promoting shared decision-making.
  • Build respectful, collaborative relationships with consultants, nurses, and wider MDT colleagues.
  • Provide professional leadership, supervision, and support to pharmacy staff, fostering development and wellbeing.
  • Promote strong clinical governance, contributing to guidelines, policies, audit, and quality improvement.
  • Champion a culture of learning, openness, and patient safety.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Masters degree or equivalent experience
  • Registration with the General Pharmaceutical Council
  • Advanced qualification in specialist area
  • NHSE Digital Clinical Safety Practitioner course
Desirable criteria
  • Post grad qualifications in Management/Leadership
  • Project management qualification
  • Formal leadership training via a recognised educational or NHS provider
  • Post grad qualifications in IT

Knowledge and Experience

Essential criteria
  • Extensive relevant post registration experience in hospital with proven experience as a lead specialist clinical pharmacist
  • Recent experience of successfully managing change in a complex environment
  • Advanced use of electronic prescribing systems
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of managing a project
