Job overview

We are looking to recruit a highly motivated doctor with a passion for innovation and education to work within the Care of the Elderly department at Gloucester Royal Hospital

This post is ideal for those looking for an exciting, busy day job while maintaining a good work-life balance. This post offers 0900-1700, Monday to Friday shifts with no evenings, weekends or nights. One day per week would be a ‘Self-Development Day’, giving the successful applicant time to work on organising the COTE teaching programme, Quality Improvement Projects or other educational activities with a Care of the Elderly focus.

Within this post, we would expect the applicant to organise and lead the COTE teaching programme, currently a 1 hour session held on Wednesdays or Thursdays from 1300 until 1400, focusing on core principles of Care of the Elderly Medicine. The successful doctor would also need a strong desire to support the pastoral and educational needs of Foundation Trainees by providing assessments and on-the-job teaching.

Main duties of the job

Clinical duties include, but are not limited to;

  • Supporting or leading ward-rounds; undertaking assessment and examination of ward-based patients, ordering appropriate investigations, interpreting investigation findings, forming a list of differential diagnoses and initiating treatment accordingly.
  • Performing diagnostic/therapeutic procedures, subject to training/experience.  Including, but not exclusively:
    • Venepuncture
    • Cannulation
    • Arterial blood gases
    • Catheterisation of males
  • It is recognized that the successful candidate may not be able to perform all these tasks at the beginning and further individual training and supervision to acquire these skills will be provided the candidate should not take on a skill in which they do not have experience.
  • Developing and maintaining specialist medical knowledge appropriate to COTE and Stroke Medicine, including, but not limited to:
    • Dementia and delirium
    • Falls
    • Frailty
    • Continence
    • Impaired balance
    • Nutrition – NGT insertion
    • Stroke – Acute management and rehabilitation
    • Movement Disorders

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The Self-Development Day is not a day off. We would expect the successful candidate to be self-motivated and demonstrate engagement with their onwards career development and learning. Previous candidates have used this time to study for a Masters in Medical Education, pursue interests in Clinical Governance or Quality Improvement or attend routine clinics in a sub-speciality area of their choice. The Self-Development Day can be on the same day every week, but occasionally we ask the candidate to be flexible in order to facilitate leave elsewhere in the COTE department. At times of high clinical pressures the self-development day may be cancelled, we aim to keep this to the very minimal and only as a last resort.

  • Keeping up to date with current guidelines and maintain best practice.
  • Contributing to achieving and maintaining performance within the hospital and department.
  • Contributing to the development of efficient pathways of care in accordance with current best practice and national guidelines.
  • Helping to facilitate and improve Foundation Trainee, Physician Associate and Medical Student placements.
  • Working within the framework of the scope of professional practice.
  • Working within the multidisciplinary team to ensure effective team working in the provision of medical care to patients on a day-to-day basis.
  • Developing clinical guidelines to ensure best practice for the management of a wide range of medical conditions.
  • Supporting and contributing to timely discharge planning including completing discharge summaries and support optimising bed capacity.
  • Abiding by the Clinical & Corporate Governance policies of the Trust.
  • Taking part in the administration of the department and the involvement in the management of resources.
  • Fully documenting all aspects of patient care and completing all required paperwork.

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • Evidence of achievement of Foundation training competencies by time of appointment in line with GMC standards in Good Medical Practice.
  • Eligible for full registration with the GMC at time of appointment.
Desirable criteria
  • MRCP Part 1
  • Recognised qualification in teaching
  • Current ALS certification of equivalent

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Relevant specialty clinical knowledge: capacity to apply sound clinical knowledge relevant to the job
  • experience in making clinical decisions and managing risk. Knows when to seek help, able to prioritise clinical need.
  • Practical skills: shows aptitude for practical skills, required in the job
Desirable criteria
  • Out of hours experience relevant to the job.
