Eyford Day Surgery and Theatre Team (Ophthalmology) have a vacancy post for full- time (37.5 hours/week) scrub/day unit nurse. We are looking to recruit a motivated and enthusiastic nurse with a keen interest in ophthalmology, who is ready to broaden their nursing skills in this fast-paced and friendly unit. We care for patients undergoing elective surgery and also ophthalmology emergencies requiring surgical intervention. We are a specialized area and we work with an excellent team of surgeons and anaesthetists providing the best care for all of our service users.

8-6pm; 8-7pm (Tuesdays only) and 8-6pm one Saturday a month

Prif ddyletswyddau'r swydd

You will be working mainly in the Day  Unit but you will have the opportunity to work in Theatres on a rotational post upon arrangement. The aim of the rotational system between the Theatre and Day Unit  is to provide high standards of patients care. 

The main duties of the job will be:

1. To perform 'scrub' duties in Theatre

2. To develop new skills and competencies with willingness

3. To admit/discharge patients safely

4. To cover 24 hour on call emergencies

5. To attend and provide evidence of ongoing professional development

6. To manage own workload, be organised, tidy and work efficiently and in a timely manner

7. To manage and complete Trak care/H-Trak system entry correctly

8. To accept link role responsibilities

9. To instil eye drops pre-operatively/intra-operatively 

The patients will expect, and will receive, the highest standards of professional care by all members of the team who will be involved. 

To work in a clinical environment and provide a high standard of patient care, able to assess and prepare patients for procedures recover and discharge them safely and assess – treat – discharge or admit patients seen in our area. Working alongside the specialist teams will ensure a positive patient experience and optimal surgical outcome and prevent delays in treatment, assessment and intervention.

- To prepare operating room by checking all necessary equipment and machines required are available and functional.

- Ensure sterility of the instruments and check their conditions prior to use.

- To attend and engage in WHO team briefing.

- To scrub and assist surgeons when required.

- Ensure all equipment is accounted for and correct after the operation.

- To accurately document and chart procedures undertaken during surgery. Details are entered accurately on Trak/H-Trak and Medisoft system.

- Conduct final assessment after the procedure and provide a brief post-operative instruction to the patient.

- To clean theatres at the end of the day. Ensure cleaning checklist is followed and completed on a daily basis.

- To admit/discharge patients for surgery.

- To ensure patients notes are prepared, checked and ready prior to surgery.

- To ensure PGDs are followed and checked accordingly.

- To ensure medication cupboards are checked and topped-up on daily basis

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE REQUIRED

Registered Adult Nurse with the Nursing and Midwifery Council 
Basic IT skills

Basic levels of dexterity and accuracy pertaining to clinical skills.

Act as a resource for all staff disseminating clinical skills and knowledge.

Have basic theatre scrub experience.

Have basic knowledge of ophthalmic surgery or ophthalmology in general.

KEY RESULT AREAS

Demonstrate ability to assess patient condition and implement appropriate care, within the disciplinary team.

To communicate effectively, especially where patient ability to do is compromised.

Have the ability to disseminate contentious and delicate information appropriately.

To adhere to all Trust policies and procedures and professional code of conduct

To retrieve and input patient and staff information from computer based system.

CHALLENGING PART OFTHE JOB

Dealing with difficult situations/people.

24 hour on -call for theatre.

Ability to work under pressure and effective time management.

Consolidation of training and development of clinical skills.
