Job overview

Radiotherapy Principal Physicist-  Band 8a

We welcome applications from candidates with relevant qualifications, however those with less experience are invited to apply. 

The post holder will  participate in general radiotherapy physics work and provide particular support to the area of clinical computing within radiotherapy.

Main duties of the job

To participate in  the safe delivery of Radiotherapy at Cheltenham General Hospital (GRH) and the satellite centre in conjunction with other Medical Physics Experts (MPEs) and senior staff within the Radiotherapy Department, with particular concentration on all aspects of computing related medical devices within the service including Treatment Planning Systems, Dose Calculation Software, Oncology Information Systems and bespoke solutions.

To develop and maintain information and computing systems used to ensure all patients have excellent care in our Radiotherapy centre

To have an in-depth knowledge of the legislation associated with ionising radiation, including the Ionising Radiations Regulations 2017 and the Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2017

To participate in staff training including  for trainee clinical scientists, clinical technologists and radiographers.

Person specification

Qualifications, Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • MSc in Medical Physics
  • HCPC Registration as a Clinical Scientist (Medical Physics)
  • Extensive post-registration experience or equivalent in radiotherapy
  • Certificate of competence as a Medical Physics Expert in Radiotherapy
  • Significant experience of scientific computing
  • Degree in physics or related discipline
  • Understanding of legislation as applied to clinical computing
Desirable criteria
  • Evidence of delivering scientific training and education
  • Evidence of dealing with radiation incidents and interaction with regulators.
  • Up-to-date detailed expert knowledge of Ionising Radiation Physics and relevant Radiation Protection legislation
  • Experience of delivering quality control programmes within Radiotherapy
