The role of the Urology Cancer Nurse Specialist is a great opportunity to develop your clinical and professional practice. Excellent communication skills and self-awareness are required for your own and others well-being. The post holder will be able to work effectively as part of a team and autonomously. The post holder will be an effective core member of the Urology Multidisciplinary Team (MDT) within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, acting as a specialist practitioner within the Urology team demonstrating highly developed specialist knowledge in the management of patients with urological diseases and their physical and emotional care.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will deliver the following: -
Be present at clinical appointments, where patients are receiving a cancer diagnosis, offering additional support and guidance in the early stages and throughout the whole of their pathway
Provide holistic support for patients.
Allow the CNS to offer support to patients in inpatient settings
Make improvements from both national and local drivers
Ensure patients concerns and questions are answered in a timely manner
Prevent unnecessary attendances at the emergency department and admissions
Working for our organisation
The Urology Team consists of 13 Consultants, 8 Clinical Nurse Specialists and 2 Cancer Support Workers along with a specialist administrative team to support the patient journey and experience. Which has been enhanced by the move to a new Urology Department on Alstone Clinic. In addition, within the urology team we have nurse practitioners, surgical care practitioners and our specialised ward based in Cheltenham.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Liaise with the various multi-disciplinary teams regarding the management of patients.
To use advanced communication skills to: promote a positive working environment, impart significant news, and implement change.
Complete nurse led appointments and follow up clinics via face to face and telephone where appropriate.
Maintain accurate and contemporaneous patient records.
Participation within shared governance councils
To support capacity within the clinical area in order to expedite investigations and improve patient experience

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Active registration with the NMC as a Registered Nurse
- Evidence of ongoing professional development through maintenance of a professional portfolio, registration revalidation & commitment to lifelong learning
Desirable criteria
- Recognised Prescribing course or willing work towards
- Recognised Health Assessment course or willing work towards
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Passion for teaching, education and practice development and ability to professionally develop individuals
- Demonstrates ability to question and challenge nursing practice in a constructive way so that standards of patient care are continually evaluated and improved
- Able to effectively and appropriately escalate concerns to reduce risk and promote patient safety
Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working with surgical urological patients OR Oncology patients
- Experience of supporting patients who have a cancer diagnosis
- Experience in patient advocacy.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of post graduate learning
