Job overview

This role is offered on a permanent basis. The hours are part-time, 22.5 hours per week. 

Hope House Sexual Assault Referral Centre (SARC) is a service in Gloucestershire offering 24/7 emotional and practical support; as well as forensic medical care, to anyone who has been raped or sexually assaulted.

Victims are offered support based on their individual needs and can access the service via the Police and other professionals. Victims can also contact the SARC directly to arrange an appointment without Police involvement.

The role of a SARC Team Leader is to support the SARC Service Manager with the management and development of the Crisis Worker and Administrative Team; based at Hope House SARC. The post holder will also contribute to the Crisis Worker rota, on an adhoc basis, as the service requires. They will be able to support the Sexual Offences Examiner, during a Forensic Medical Examination. 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will report directly to the SARC Service Manager. They shall be based at Hope House SARC, Gloucester. 

They will lead the Crisis Worker and Administrative Team; and support the Service Manager, Clinical Director, and Lead Nurse, with the day-to-day operational running of Hope House SARC. 

In addition, they will be available on an adhoc basis, as the service requires, for on-call duties out of hours 07:00-19:15 and 19:00-07:15 (weeknights, weekends and bank holidays). Any hours worked while on call will be paid at the Agenda for Change hourly rate, and a retainer fee will be provided.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To conduct annual appraisals and 1-2-1’s; and adhere to competency frameworks for ensuring that all staff are up to date with appropriate mandatory and essential to role training; ensuring their competences are maintained. 
  • To participate in the recruitment of staff, in line with the Trust’s operation recruitment policies.  
  • To manage the Crisis Worker on-call rota and observe the Team, on a regular basis; to ensure service delivery, as commissioned.  
  • Conduct audits including review of notes, record keeping and safeguarding.   
  • To support the Service Manager, Clinical Director and Lead Nurse with service development and implementation.  
  • To conduct case debriefs with the Crisis Workers, following a Forensic Medical Examination. 
  • To support the Service Manager and the Business Intelligence Teams, to implement, monitor and evaluate the SARC service; providing monthly, quarterly and annual reports.  
  • Work with the SARC Manager and Engagement Coordinator to raise awareness and develop communication strategies with key partners and key referral services across Gloucestershire. This will include attending monthly meetings with Gloucestershire Constabulary and other partner agencies.  
  • Ensure effective management of absence including sickness, in line with Trust Policies.  
  • Monitor all aspects of Health & Safety, and address with the Service Manager as necessary. 
  • To provide 24-hour support to victims of sexual abuse; who may or may not wish to make a report to the police.
  • To provide support and information, both in person and over the phone, to enable victims to make informed decisions in relation to medical care, forensic examination and police involvement. 
  • To provide a sensitive and non-judgmental service, using effective communication skills.
  •     To know and understand the processes and procedures involved in attending the SARC and to explain these clearly to the victim in order to gain informed consent for examination.
  • To inform victims about the self-referral service and the choices available; ensuring that they are supported and informed in a sensitive and appropriate way.       
  • To advocate for the victim when needed, ensuring that their dignity, wishes and beliefs are respected and that they are involved in a shared decision-making process. This will include liaising with the Police and third-party organisations.
  • To offer a welcoming, safe and confidential environment for the victim and their families, attending the centre.  
  • To provide support to the Sexual Offences Examiner, during the Forensic Medical Examination.
  • To assist with the collection of forensic samples, ensuring continuity and chain of evidence are maintained.    
  • To undertake a Forensic Medical Examination at any location outside the SARC, in order to meet the victim’s needs (ie, hospital).
  • To forensically clean the examination suite to maintain the forensic integrity of the SARC; in accordance with the ISO 15189 FSR Accreditation.
