Are you a driven and compassionate nurse with a passion for cardiology and a vision for career development? This is your opportunity to join our dynamic, patient-centred Arrhythmia Team in a Band 6 development role, with a clear pathway to a Band 7 Specialist Nurse post following completion of independent prescribing and agreed competencies.
In this pivotal role, you will work alongside an experienced multidisciplinary team of cardiac physiologists, consultants, specialist nurses, and electrophysiology professionals, managing patients with a range of complex arrhythmias across outpatient, inpatient, and community settings.

As a Band 6 Arrhythmia Specialist Nurse, you will play a vital role in the delivery of expert, patient-centred care for individuals with complex arrhythmias. This development post is designed to prepare you for progression to a Band 7 role once you have completed your independent prescribing qualification and achieved key clinical competencies.
Key Responsibilities Include:

Conducting structured patient assessments and follow-ups for individuals with arrhythmias and implanted cardiac devices (e.g., pacemakers, ICDs).

Supporting and delivering nurse-led arrhythmia clinics under supervision, with increasing autonomy as competencies are achieved.

Providing patient education, lifestyle advice, and support for self-management, including anticoagulation and symptom management.

Collaborating with consultants and the wider team to contribute to shared decision-making and personalised care plans.

Interpreting remote device data and managing alerts/escalations as part of the cardiac monitoring service.

Participating in ward rounds and inpatient reviews, supporting continuity of care from hospital to community settings.

Engaging in service development, audits, and quality improvement initiatives to improve patient outcomes and pathways.

Undertaking postgraduate education (e.g., prescribing, arrhythmia modules) with structured mentorship to progress to Band 7.

Job Summary:
The post holder will work as part of the specialist arrhythmia nursing team within the cardiology service to support the management of patients with cardiac rhythm disturbances. This Band 6 role is a developmental post with a clear progression pathway to Band 7 once the post holder has completed the Independent Non-Medical Prescribing course and demonstrated competence in advanced arrhythmia care as defined by the department’s competency framework.
The post offers an exciting opportunity to develop advanced clinical skills in arrhythmia management, including patient assessment, care planning, device management, remote monitoring, and nurse-led clinics. The role is integral to enhancing the quality of care for patients living with arrhythmias and implanted cardiac devices across inpatients and outpatients.
Main Responsibilities:
Clinical Duties:
-
Undertake comprehensive nursing assessments of patients with arrhythmias, including history taking, symptom analysis, and ECG interpretation under supervision.
-
Support and gradually lead nurse-led clinics for conditions such as atrial fibrillation, SVT, bradycardia, and patients with implanted devices (e.g., pacemakers, ICDs, CRTs).
-
Provide telephone/virtual consultations and support remote monitoring for patients with cardiac devices, escalating concerns appropriately.
-
Assist in the review and management of inpatients with arrhythmias, including pre/post electrophysiology procedures and device implantation.
-
Deliver patient education, including lifestyle modification, anticoagulation counselling, and arrhythmia symptom management.
-
Support cardioversion preparation and follow-up in collaboration with the consultant and EP team.
-
Interpret remote device transmissions and support appropriate clinical triage.
-
Maintain accurate, timely, and comprehensive documentation of all clinical interactions.
-
Promote patient safety and contribute to early detection of deterioration or complications.
Professional Development:

Undertake an approved Independent Non-Medical Prescribing course

Participate in the department’s specialist competency framework to transition into a Band 7 post.

Attend arrhythmia-specific training courses, study days, and conferences as part of CPD.

Engage in clinical supervision and reflective practice.
Service Development and Quality Improvement:

Participate in audits, patient feedback initiatives, and service evaluations to support evidence-based improvements in arrhythmia care.

Contribute to pathway development for AF, syncope, post-implant follow-up, and virtual monitoring services.

Support innovation in nurse-led services and digital health technologies (e.g., virtual clinics, wearable monitoring).
Key Working Relationships:

Work closely with Consultant Electrophysiologists, Cardiologists, Cardiac Physiologists, and Specialist Nurses within cardiology.

Collaborate with GPs, and community heart failure teams to ensure safe, integrated care.

Liaise with admissions, inpatient wards, outpatient departments, and day case units to support smooth patient journeys.

Engage with administrative and clerical staff to ensure efficient clinic management, booking, and communication.
Leadership and Communication:
-
Act as a role model for high standards of nursing care and professionalism within the cardiology department.

Provide informal education and support to ward staff, students, and junior nurses regarding arrhythmia care.

Communicate effectively with patients and their families, using empathy and clarity, including discussions about long-term device therapy and treatment options.

Contribute to departmental meetings, service reviews, and multidisciplinary team (MDT) discussions.
