Job overview
We are an enthusiastic and adaptable Care of The Elderly Team of 13 consultants. We wish to appoint three new consultant colleagues to join our expanding Care of the Elderly and Frailty service. We are looking for candidates who have a special interest in orthogeriatrics, peri-operative medicine, interface medicine and community geriatrics.
Successful applicants will have a base ward or work in the community with an additional opportunity to develop their specialist interest. All consultant posts include time working with our increasingly successful Frailty Assessment Service which encompasses a Direct Assessment Pathway, Frailty Assessment Unit, Frailty SDEC and a Virtual Ward which is currently in development.
The post also incorporates a fixed weekend Care of the Elderly post take ward round and Frailty Assessment Service (FAS) sessions on a 1 in 8 basis (but no on-call). This frequency will fall as we continue expanding our consultant workforce.

Main duties of the job
This is a substantive post working within in Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, one of the largest Foundation Trusts in England. Whilst advertised as a full time post, we will accept part time or flexible working requests for the right candidate and aim to have one day working from home to support wellbeing.

Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Trust (GHNHSFT) was formed in April 2002 and became a second wave Foundation Trust in July 2004. We are a large organisation providing acute services from Gloucestershire Royal Hospital in Gloucester and Cheltenham General Hospital. We provide COTE services across our County of 1,220 square miles. Our population is c. 640,000 with an annual year on year growth rate of 0.8%. Within our population 21% are over the age of 65 and the number aged 65 and over will rise by two-thirds between now and 2030. Detailed job description and main responsibilities
We expect the post-holder to develop and lead a robust service in order to provide high quality care to patients in a timely manner:
- To be responsible for patients seen by the FAS service on a rota basis
- To be responsible for medical input to general elderly medicine inpatients on one of our COTE wards
- To be responsible for providing advice and input to elderly medicine patients referred from other medical or surgical specialties
- To provide advice and input to elderly medicine patients referred via GP’s and/or senior nursing/therapy staff within the county
- To provide outpatient clinics depending on the interests of the applicant and needs of the county-wide service
- To provide weekend post take and FAS ward rounds for COTE Medicine on a 1 in 8 fixed session rota (no on-call)
- To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements within the parameters of our Division’s and Trust’s agreed objectives

Qualifications
Essential criteria
- Full General Medical Council registration.
- On Specialist Register for General (Internal)) Medicine and Geriatric Medicine via: CCT or CESR-CP (Combined Programme) (proposed CCT/CESR-CP date must be within 6 months of interview - CESR or European Community Rights
- MRCP
Desirable criteria
- Higher degree
- Teaching qualification Management/Leadership qualification
- Membership of British Geriatrics Society
Clinical Experience
Essential criteria
- Proven clinical skills in Care of the Elderly, General and Acute Medicine and in leading a multi-disciplinary team.
- Ability to work closely with colleagues in Acute Medicine and Emergency Medicine
Desirable criteria
- Experience in community geriatrics e.g. community hospitals, nursing homes, ‘interface’ geriatrics
Audit and evidence-based practice:
Essential criteria
- Experience in devising, conducting and applying audit results and then closing the loop
Desirable criteria
- Training in and experience of evidence-based practice
Management & Administrative skills
Essential criteria
- Willing and able to work with colleagues in other specialities, professions and roles to ensure the delivery of a high quality, safe and reliable service
- Familiar with clinical governance
- A willingness to accept responsibility and provide leadership
- Awareness of current relevant developments within the wider NHS
- Determination to have a key role in establishing and developing the service
Desirable criteria
- Experience of clinical governance
- Experience of protocol / pathway development and change management
Teaching Experience
Essential criteria
- Must have an interest in teaching all grades of hospital and professional staff
Desirable criteria
- Practical experience in teaching posts
Research Experience
Essential criteria
- Track record of critical reading
- Ability to apply research outcomes to clinical problems
Desirable criteria
- Plans for possible ongoing research projects relevant to service
