Job overview

This is a full-time Trust Speciality Doctor post to join the clinical Haematology department at Gloucestershire Royal Hospitals. The department has an excellent track record of supporting doctors to develop their career and achieve training or consultant posts. 

These posts will be based at the Regional Cancer Centre based at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH) and Gloucester Royal Hospital on a rotational basis.  The posts will join an established team of 9 Consultants who provide a full range of diagnostic and clinical haematology services to a population of approximately 650,000. This includes clinical (attending) inpatient duties to BCSH Level 3 care at the Regional Cancer Centre based at Cheltenham General Hospital (CGH), day care services at Gloucester Royal Hospital and outpatient and laboratory facilities at both sites.  The Consultant team is supported by 3-4 Specialty Trainees (St3+), 1 ST1/2, 1 FY1, 1 Transfusion Practitioner, 1 ANP, 7 Specialist Nurses and 3 non-medical prescribers.  In addition, resident doctors support the inpatient wards on a rotational basis.

Main duties of the job

We are looking to appoint a suitably experienced medical physician to support Haematology services across both Cheltenham General Hospital and Gloucester Royal Hospital, together with appropriate teaching and supervision of junior doctors and medical students.  This is one of 3 posts developed to manage the increase in chemotherapy workload.  The post holder will be expected to work closely with their colleagues and the Specialist Registrars to provide cover across the day unit, outpatients and the ward to deliver high quality patient care.

Integral to the responsibilities of the post are the following requirements:-

  • To support the provision of a first class clinical service
  • To provide effective middle grade leadership to the staff working on the ward, day unit and outpatient clinics
  • To undertake all work in accordance with the Trust’s procedures and operating policies
  • To conduct clinical practice in accordance with contractual requirements and within the parameters of the Trust’s and Division’s services plans
  • To support the clinical decision making of medical and nursing staff on the specialty ward.
  • To lead, in conjunction with the Consultant workforce, the education programme for junior doctors

  • To examine and treat both in-patients and out-patients referred to the Department
  • To support the clinical decision making of junior medical and nursing staff
  • To participate in the undergraduate teaching programme

Qualifications and Training

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification. Completion of F1/F2
  • Full GMC Registration and a license to practice
  • MRCP
Desirable criteria
  • MRCPath

Knowledge and Skills

Essential criteria
  • Applicant’s knowledge is up-to-date and fit to practice safely
  • Applicant to have demonstrable skills in written and spoken English that are adequate to enable effective communication about medical topics with patients and colleagues which could be demonstrated by one of the following: • Applicants have undertaken undergraduate medical training in English • Applicants have scores in the academic International English Language Testing System (IELTS) or equivalent equal to those required for recruitment to MMC specialty training programmes. If applicants believe they have adequate communication skills but do not fit into one of the examples they need to provide evidence.
