Job overview

This post is for a Consultant Medical Oncologist working within Gloucestershire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. . We expect all consultants on 10 PAs to see between 150 and 200 new patients per year; this equates to 4 new patients on average per week. This is advertised as a 10 PA post covering breast and upper gastrointestinal (GI) cancers; we welcome candidates looking to work either full or less than full time and we will actively try to accommodate interests of the successful candidate. Main duties of the job

This Medical Oncology post will cover breast and upper GI services. The successful candidate will be expected to continue the established links with site specialised teams through the appropriate multidisciplinary team meetings. The appointee will be encouraged to participate in the departmental philosophy of entering patients into clinical trials wherever possible.  Further strengthening and development of multidisciplinary teams is anticipated. The post holder will maintain and foster links with the multi-disciplinary staff groups within oncology, the Palliative Care teams, colleagues in Medical and Surgical specialities, and colleagues in primary care. We are looking for a colleague who is interested in research.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The appointee will be expected to:

  • Take responsibility for the delivery of high quality medical oncology care
  • Examine and treat patients in accordance with agreed Department, Regional Cancer Network and Trust wide policies
  • Work with local and regional MDT colleagues to ensure the most appropriate care is delivered to patients in a timely way
  • Support the clinical decision making of other medical, nursing and pharmacy staff
  • Provide on call support, participating in the Department rota for on-call and as per agreed protocols. To remain contactable and available when on call
  • Carry out additional ward visits appropriate to the level of clinical care required by patients, as agreed with the AOS nursing teams and at the request of consultant colleagues.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full GMC registration with entry on the GMC Specialist Register via: CCT or CESR (CP) (proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview)
Desirable criteria
  • Additional qualification in Quality Improvement, Medical Education, or other pertinent expertise
  • Research degree (MD/PhD)
  • Additional management qualification
  • Additional Education Qualification

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Evidence of expertise in the areas of special interest relevant to the Job Plan
  • Active involvement in clinical trials
  • Training of resident doctors
