We are looking for an enthusiastic Specialty Doctor to join our General Surgery department.

The Specialty Doctor post in General Surgery offers excellent training, experience and developmental opportunities in elective and emergency General Surgery. The department is committed to support the appointee by offering them extensive opportunities to develop their surgical experience and their portfolio, with a view to their successful career progression. This post is an exciting opportunity for a dynamic and experienced surgical trainee with ambition to progress their career.

Main duties of the job

This post currently operates a 1:9 full-shift on call rota with prospective cover for annual and study leave. On the night shift the specialty doctor will work with a clinical fellow, and a consultant on call from home (both General Surgery and Vascular consultants). The vascular acute take for North Wales is located at Glan Clwyd Hospital.

Working for our organisation

The appointee will be assigned their own educational supervisor, and a learning agreement will be made and subsequently monitored. Active participation in surgical audit and clinical research projects will be encouraged. The appointee will have the opportunity to develop teaching skills within the department, and also through the undergraduate teaching programme. They will develop presentation skills at departmental and hospital meetings, e.g. presenting the findings of their audits and research. Study leave for attendance at courses and conferences will be encouraged and supported, with many courses, available locally. The appointee will be encouraged and supported to submit their own research or audit outcomes for presentation at national conferences. Assistance with exam preparation (e.g. FRCS) and interview practice will be provided, if appropriate.

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Full registration with a licence to practice ,MRCS or equivalent, ATLS.
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant higher degree, diploma or other post graduate qualification.

EXPERIENCES

Essential criteria
  • Broad clinical experience in general surgery.
  • Shall have completed at least four years’ full-time postgraduate training (or its equivalent gained on a part-time or flexible basis) at least two of which will be the specialty of General Surgery; or shall have equivalent experience and competencies
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in vascular surgery
  • Clinical experience in other related specialties

ABILITY

Essential criteria
  • Ability to know when to ask for help
  • Ability to apply knowledge
  • Ability to write relevant, legible clinical notes
  • Safe and effective oral communication skills
  • Willingness to involve patients in their management
Desirable criteria
  • Advanced IT Skills including knowledge of web site authoring
