We are inviting candidates to be part of our Anaesthetic Consultant team at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. Our service is expanding in all areas of pain management including inpatient pain as well as chronic pain. This post is being advertised with special Interests in both chronic and inpatient pain.
This is a full time 10 PA Consultant Anaesthetist post, which is based at Basingstoke & North Hampshire Hospitals (BNHH). Pain and anaesthetic sessions would be anticipated to be delivered in Basingstoke. If desired, some anaesthetic sessions could be delivered cross-site but by mutual agreement and depending on service needs.
The successful candidate will work within our friendly anaesthetic consultant team and provide departmental leadership and supervision of a group of junior and mid-grade doctors at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust. They will also work with a multidisciplinary pain team, joining two other consultant anaesthetists, 3 specialist pain nurses, a specialist physiotherapist, an advanced physiotherapy practitioner and a pain psychologist.
Main duties of the job
Role-specific duties:
• Provide a safe, effective, responsive, and caring anaesthetic service to a level expected by a Consultant.
• Support, lead and develop our pain service at BNH.
• Agree a job plan with the Clinical Director in Anaesthetics and work flexibly as far as is possible to accommodate
the needs of the Department.
• Participate in the anaesthetic consultant on call rota at BNH.
• To ensure that standards are maintained and developed through clinical audit, quality improvement

• Participate actively in clinical governance, including reporting of incidents, investigation of serious incidents and
any complaints.
• Show a determination to meet or exceed the standards of the National Patients’ Rights Charter.
• To be familiar with the Royal College of Anaesthetists’ curriculum for Junior Doctor Training and contribute to their
training requirements, including tutorials and educational supervision where required
Working for our organisation
Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital (BNHH)
Anaesthesia is provided for elective and emergency surgery across 7 main theatres, 4 day-case theatres, 1 ophthalmic theatre and 2 obstetric theatres. The CEPOD and obstetric theatre are available 24 hours per day and there are also dedicated trauma lists seven days per week.
There are two critical care units (A&B) with a total of 18 beds that are used flexibly to provide intensive care and high dependency level care. There are approximately 1050 admissions per year to Basingstoke Critical Care. Medical admissions account for 60% of the case mix, emergency surgery 15% and elective surgery 25%. Critical Care Outreach is available from both Critical Care sites.
Royal Hampshire County Hospital (RHCH)
Anaesthesia is provided for elective and emergency surgery in the main 5 Nightingale theatres and 3 daycase theatres. Florence Portal House accommodates our obstetric centre and includes 2 elective theatres for breast and gynaecology. The CEPOD theatre operate half days in hours and at night and 24 hours at weekends. Obstetric theatres operate 24 hours per day.
The Critical Care Unit currently has a 10-bed unit caring for a mixture of HDU (level 2) and ICU (level 3) patients. With a mixture of surgical and medical admissions, there are approximately 600 admissions per year, with approximately 40% of patients needing ICU (level 3) care.

Professional Qualification
Essential criteria
- Full GMC Registration and on the GMC Specialist Register for Anaesthesia (or will obtain within 6 months of interview date)
- MBBS or equivalent
- FRCA & CCT in Anaesthesia (or CESR)
- Pain training to a standard as represented by successful completion of the RCOA curriculum for advanced pain training (or equivalent) and endorsed by the FFPMRCA (or equivalent)
Desirable criteria
- Membership of relevant specialist Societies
- MD or equivalent
Clinical Experience Knowledge•
Essential criteria
- Experience of general & regional anaesthesia to level expected of UK consultant anaesthetist for a wide range of surgical specialists
Desirable criteria
- A demonstrable interest in service improvement within the pain service
- A demonstrable interest and participation pre-assessment
Skills and Ability
Essential criteria
- Understands the concepts and principals of clinical governance.
- Aware of the issues affecting current & future NHS practice.
- Able to demonstrate leadership capability within multi-disciplinary teams.
- Understands the NHS system nationally, regionally and locally.
- Evidence of organisational ability
- Willingness to share administrative responsibilities

Desirable criteria
- Attended an NHS Management Course appropriate to Consultant duties.

Research & Teaching
Essential criteria
- Commitment to teaching of both undergraduates and postgraduates and evidence of active participation in teaching
- An understanding of general principles, scientific method and interpretation of literature.
- Thorough understanding of principles of medical audit.
- Completed audit projects with evidence of active participation in audit
Desirable criteria
- Expertise in teaching.
- Evidence of personal research projects and their presentation.
- Publications in peer review journals
Other requirements
Essential criteria
- An appropriate, well organised and clearly presented CV including experience in the training of Specialist Trainees.
- Excellent communicator, able to work in a close-knit team and co-operate fully with all medical and paramedical staff
- Able to take responsibility, cope with stressful situations, and adapt to change
Desirable criteria
- Awareness of current service development issues within HHFT
- Demonstrable ability to effect positive sustainable change
