Specialty Doctor in Anaesthetics

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

Job overview

We are inviting candidates to be part of our Anaesthetic team at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, working at Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Basingstoke.

This post is central to delivering effective patient care at Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.  The post will be primarily based in Basingstoke but you may be asked to attend other sites as required. The post will be involved in all aspects of diagnosis and treatment of patients.  The post holder would be on the resident 1st on call rota working in theatres and supporting in Critical Care.

Main duties of the job

A formal job plan will be agreed between the appointee and the clinical supervisor. The clinical duties will include those normally expected of a CT2 trainee in an Anaesthetic Department of any general hospital in the United Kingdom.  Resident on-call availability is required.  The regular on-call commitment is 1:8 on a full shift rota.  The weekend component of this rota is 1:8 long days and 1:8 nights.  Prospective cover for colleagues’ annual leave is required.  There is potential for working more or less than this to suit individual circumstances.

Duties include being part of the 1st on call rota, when you will be covering theatres and the Critical Care Unit.  Critical Care duties include handover regular ward rounds and assessment of critically unwell patients in A&E and on the wards.  This is supported by a consultant in intensive care and consultant general anaesthetist, both non-resident.  The majority of clinical work will be in BNHH main theatres or Day Treatment Centre, anaesthetising for a variety of surgical specialties.  There is opportunity to develop confidence anaesthetising for major surgical cases or particular sub-specialties, under consultant supervision.

Working for our organisation

Our vision is to provide outstanding care for every patient. Patient care is at the heart of what we do at our three sites: Basingstoke and North Hampshire Hospital, Royal Hampshire County Hospital in Winchester and Andover War Memorial Hospital. Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust provides medical and surgical services to a population of approximately 600,000 people across Hampshire and parts of West Berkshire.

Our cultural ambition is to have a culture that places people at the heart of all we do, where we all belong, and where learning, improvement and excellence thrive.

We provide specialist services to people across the UK and internationally. We are one of only two centres in the UK treating pseudomyxoma peritonei (a rare form of abdominal cancer) and we are leaders in the field of tertiary liver cancer and colorectal cancer.

The trust employs more than 9,000 staff and has a turnover of over £500 million a year. As a Foundation Trust, we are directly accountable to our members through the governors. The Council of Governors represent the interests of their constituencies and influence the future plans of the Foundation Trust.
