The Rapid Covid Testing Team needs You!!!

These Associate Practitioner positions contribute to the Trusts ability to safely look after it's patients.  You will be working in the Pathology Laboratories at either the Basingstoke and/or  Winchester sites and  will be using some of the newest technology in the UK to screen patients for Covid as well as other respiratory pathogens before admission to a ward.


Main duties of the job

You will be working with a variety of sample types and will be required to run the analysers as well as perform maintenance, reagent preparation, quality control, report results and troubleshoot analyser & result issues.

The successful applicants will be excellent communicators who enjoy working in a busy, complex environment with the ability to manage multiple priorities and deadlines.

You will need to be able to  work flexibly as part of a small, happy team delivering a 24/7 service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To participate in rotas covering night shifts and weekend work.
  • To analyse samples using complex diagnostic procedures including PCR and LAMP.
  • To report analyser results as appropriate and to discuss any errors or issues with the Team leader.
  • Perform routine operative maintenance on laboratory instruments and undertake corrective maintenance and troubleshooting when appropriate.
  • To follow standard operating procedures (SOP’s) at all times.
  • To adhere to Trust Policy regarding Data Protection, Information Governance and Freedom of Information.
  • To adhere to Departmental Health & Safety Policy including wearing of Personnel protective equipment when required, maintaining, and promoting high standards of health and safety at work.
  • To support the Quality Lead in audits, EQA, raising and Non-conformities on QPulse.
  • To report and remedy when within scope of practice, any instance or event which may cause a service delivery failure.
  • To report any risks, clinical and non-clinical accidents, and incidents/potential incidents. promptly and co-operate with any investigations undertaken.
  • To support and train more junior members of staff.

Training and qualifications

Essential criteria
  • GCSE’s in Maths and English equivalent to A-C
  • A Level in a science
  • BSc in a Biological Science subject
Desirable criteria
  • Masters degree in Science
  • Minimum Second class honours degree


Essential criteria
  • Laboratory experience
  • Knowledge of the theory behind PCR testing
Desirable criteria
  • Previous NHS pathology laboratory experience

Skills and abilities

  • Good interpersonal and communication skills
  • Methodical approach to following protocols and procedures.
  • Good Manual dexterity
  • Prepared to handle clinical samples
Desirable criteria
  • Ability to impart their knowledge to colleagues for training, demonstration and advice
