Hampshire Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust has re-designed its Pathology services with new state-of-the art equipment and new laboratory, and with a new Lab Info Management System being installed later this year. An opportunity for a Senior Biomedical Scientist/Training Lead within the field of Microbiology is now available.
As Training Lead the individual will be responsible for the development, coordination, delivery and evaluation of education and training programmes within the Microbiology laboratory. The post holder will ensure that all staff are trained and competent to meet user, service, regulatory, accreditation and professional requirements.
The post holder will lead in training strategy, competency assessment, quality improvement related to training, and support for workforce development across all staff groups.
As a Senior Biomedical Scientist, the post holder will also be highly skilled in microbiological investigations and able to carry out complex investigations on patient samples to diagnose infective disease and monitor the treatment of patients. They will also lead teams of Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Support Staff to deliver a patient-orientated medical laboratory service to contribute to efficient and effective care.
Main duties of the job
- Carry out investigations on samples of tissue and body fluids to diagnose disease and monitor the treatment of patients.
- Assist in the provision of reliable and accurate analytical data
- Lead teams of Biomedical Scientists and Medical Laboratory Assistants, on a rotational basis, to deliver, within budget, a patient-orientated medical laboratory service to contribute to efficient and effective care.
- To safely and efficiently manage a designated section within the laboratory to approved standards and protocols, in a safe and efficient manner so that all work in the area is performed accurately and in a timely manner.
- To provide and assist in the training of personnel within the Department.
- To ensure the effective and efficient management of staff and resources on a daily basis
- To contribute to sickness management of staff and recruitment of new staff
- To contribute to reviewing and writing of procedures.
· The co-ordination, organisation and delivery of training, induction, continuing professional development (CPD) and competency assessments in the department.
· Liaising with managers and external training personnel to ensure that all members of the team are trained and competent to meet user, regulatory, accreditation and professional requirements
- Providing leadership in progressing training strategy, departmental improvements and workforce development.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration as a Biomedical Scientist
- Education to MSc level or equivalent in Microbiology or related subject
- Evidence of continual professional development
Desirable criteria
- Qualification or formal training in education, training or leadership
Experience and knowledge
Essential criteria
- Demonstrable extensive relevant experience post registration
- Experience in managing and supporting staff development initiatives
- Demonstrated ability to use data and feedback to drive continuous improvement in training delivery
- Strong knowledge of ISO 15189
Desirable criteria
- Proven experience in designing, delivering and evaluating training programmes within a healthcare or complex organisational environment
- Experience in using Learning Management Systems (LMS) or e-learning development tools
- Experience supporting IBMS portfolios, STP trainees, and/or apprenticeships
Skills and abilities
Essential criteria
- Demonstration of advanced practical analytical skills including troubleshooting and escalation of issues
- Demonstration of ability to train different staff groups, in a variety of processes/ways
- Ability to work under pressure within a complex environment
- Excellent communication, presentation, facilitation, organisation and leadership skills
- Demonstrates implementation/maintenance of training frameworks
- Ability to develop and maintain strong working relationships across multidisciplinary teams.
- Proficient in using digital learning platforms and Microsoft Office applications
- Demonstration of commitment to equality, diversity and inclusion in education and training
Desirable criteria
- Competent IT skills, word processing, spread sheets and database software
