Job overview
We are looking for a proactive, motivated, forward thinking and dynamic individual to join our Consultant team at Hampshire Hospitals Foundation Trust on a 12 month fixed term basis until mid-April 2027. The successful applicant will be based at Basingstoke Hospital and will provide cover for both obstetrics and gynaecology. The Post is to cover the secondment of a substantive consultant with an interest in gynae oncology. The department would welcome a candidate with a specialist interest in Gynae-oncology, ambulatory hysteroscopy or vulval disease. intermediate laparoscopic skills would be an advantage as would the ability to perform ultrasound scans for postmenopausal bleeding. The locum post is for an initial period of 12 months and is available for an immediate start.
Main duties of the job
This post is advertised as a full time, 10 PA post. The successful candidate will be based at our Basingstoke site although all staff are expected to work across sites if the need arises and sessions may well be in Winchester, Basingstoke and Andover.
There is a 1 in 8 non-resident on-call commitment providing cover for both Obstetrics and Gynaecology.
There are 3 WTE Speciality Doctors contributing to resident on call duties along with 5 WTE Specialist Registrars from the Wessex Deanery.

Professional Qualifications
Essential criteria
- MBBS or equivalent
- MRCOG or equivalent
- On the GMC Specialist Register and holding the CCT or within 3 months of obtaining the CCT (with evidence of sound progression)
- Advanced Labour ward ATSM or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- High Risk Pregnancy ATSM or equivalent
- Benign Gynae ATSM
- Early Pregnancy and acute gynaecology ATSM
Experience & Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Able to deal independently with common emergencies in general obstetrics
- Experience of working in the NHS for at least 1 year
- Desire to support and promote safe birth
- Accredited expertise in the area of declared interest
Desirable criteria
- Adult Basic Life Support training up to date within 12 months
- Neonatal Resuscitation training up to date within 12 months
- Emergency drills training up to date within 12 months
- ALSO, PROMPT or MOET instructor
Skills & Ability
Essential criteria
- Ability to organise and prioritise workload effectively
- Ability to take full and independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Proven ability to work as a member of a multidisciplinary team and display leadership
Desirable criteria
- Ability to offer External Cephalic Version
- Proven self starter
Research & Teaching
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching and supervising junior medical and midwifery staff.
- Evidence of undertaking an audit, service review or guideline which improved patient care
Desirable criteria
- Experience of managing emergency drills training
- Publications in a peer reviewed journal
- Formal training in teaching eg Training the Trainers Course
