Job overview

·       To take a leadership role in providing a high standard of advanced physiotherapy to MSK outpatients and within the MDT Pain Self-Management Service.

·       To perform advanced therapeutic assessment of patients with diverse presentations and complex physical and psychological conditions, to provide a diagnosis and develop and deliver an individualised treatment programme.

·       To be empowered to work autonomously in the knowledge support is available as needed.

·       To hold responsibility for own caseload and be able to offer consultations both face to face and via telehealth, and in individual and group settings.

·       To lead in supervision and teaching within the team and to students, including preceptorship as applicable.

·       To actively contribute to service development using quality improvement methodology.

·       To deputise for the Team Lead in operational management

·       To work alongside the Research & Audit Lead to promote clinical audit, research, evidence-based practice & QI within MSK.

·       To work within the chronic pain MDT clinics

Main duties of the job

       Ensure professional and legal accountability for all work within the scope of practice.

 Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including complex cases, using advanced investigative and analytical skills. 

       To clinically deliver chronic pain self management treatment plans using both physiotherapy and psychological approaches such Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

       Provide advice, teaching & instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals

       To ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care that supports them to achieve realistic goals.

       Adhere to clinical guidelines and standards, monitoring the quality of practice. Implement policy and policy changes in own area of practice.

       Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk, demonstrating this in daily practice.

       Maintain accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous patient treatment records in line with professional standards. 

       Supervise staff and students

       Identify and lead on service development, audit and quality improvement projects and initiatives.

       Keep up to date with clinical developments and latest research, highlighting impact on current clinical practice and consulting on changes where required.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

       Ensure professional and legal accountability for all work within the scope of practice.

       Conduct comprehensive patient assessments, including complex cases, using advanced investigative and analytical skills.

       Develop and implement individualised therapy plans based on evidence-based practice and advanced clinical reasoning skills, reassessing and adjusting as needed.

       Formulate accurate prognoses, recommend best course of intervention and develop comprehensive discharge plans, including appropriate referrals to other specialities.

       To clinically deliver chronic pain self management treatment plans in group and education sessions, as well as individual sessions using both physiotherapy and psychological approaches such Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT).

       Provide advice, teaching & instruction to relatives, carers and other professionals to ensure consistency & understanding of care and the aims of therapy.

       To ensure that patients receive timely and appropriate care that supports them to achieve realistic goals.

       Adhere to clinical guidelines and standards, monitoring the quality of practice. Implement policy and policy changes in own area of practice.

       Demonstrate a sound understanding of clinical governance and clinical risk, demonstrating this in daily practice.

       Maintain accurate, comprehensive and contemporaneous patient treatment records in line with professional standards.

       Ensure the safe and competent use of gym & medical equipment and devices, training junior staff as necessary.

       Be responsible for using outcome measures to monitor and evaluate effectiveness.

       Demonstrate physical and mental ability to perform treatments requiring moderate physical exertion and sustained concentration.

       Work independently as a lone practitioner, including extended hours, cross-site working and community settings.

       Supervise and develop staff and students, ensuring professional standards and safe use of therapy equipment.

       Address professional behaviour, quality, or safety issues promptly, and participate in the appraisal process.

       Review work performance, manage work allocation, and participate in recruitment and selection processes.

       Identify and lead on service development, audit and quality improvement projects and initiatives.

       Keep up to date with clinical developments and latest research, highlighting impact on current clinical practice and consulting on changes where required.

       To provide specialist advice, training and support to all member of the chronic pain MDT and physiotherapy colleagues working in other clinical areas.

 

Person specification

Training and Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • BSc (Hons) Physiotherapy/ MSc Physiotherapy/ Grad Dip Phys or equivalent.
  • HCPC registration
  • Post graduate courses relevant to clinical speciality, CPD related to Chronic Pain
Desirable criteria
  • Relevant Msc in MSK Physiotherapy or pain management
  • CSP membership

Experience and Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Experience at Band 6 Level with diverse Band 5 experience.
  • Knowledge & experience of a wide range of approaches demonstrated by advanced clinical reasoning & in-depth awareness of evidence-based practice. in MSK and pain management
  • Experience of clinical education/ student supervision.
  • Experience of working with patients with fibromyalgia, complex regional pain syndrome and functional neurological disorders
  • Demonstrate effective caseload management and autonomous practice
  • Proficiency in IT skills
  • Experience of Audit, Research & QI.
Desirable criteria
  • Previous Band 7 experience
  • Evidence of researching HHFT as an employer
  • Member of appropriate specialist interest groups
  • Evidence of robust service improvement initiatives implemented, evidenced and audited

Skills and Ability

Essential criteria
  • Effective verbal and written communication & interpersonal skills.
  • Understanding and appropriate application of risk management, data protection, consent, and confidentiality principles
  • Involvement in clinical quality improvement, audit, and research, through to implementation and analysis
  • Deputise for more senior therapists/ Team Lead and demonstrate effective delegation of duties to other staff

  • NHS Leadership or Improvement qualification / NHS QI or audit/research qualification

  • Flexible approach to working hours
  • Flexibility to undertake additional duties as requested by Therapy Managers
  • Ability to travel between multiple sites (ACH, BNHH, RHCH) at short notice
  • Have a UK driving licence with access to a car insured for business purposes or arranging an equivalent alternative.
  • Able to recognise stress in others & act on it appropriately.
  • Commitment to maintaining and improving own standards
