Working within an Outpatients Pharmacy at a busy general hospital is hugely rewarding and we are looking for enthusiastic, motivated and passionate Superintendent Pharmacist to join our expanding, friendly and dynamic team. 

This post would suit an individual with a hospital pharmacy background, or with community pharmacy experience wishing to make a change into the hospital environment.

Working for our organisation

UPL is a wholly owned subsidiary of University Hospital Southampton NHS Foundation Trust.  The Pharmacy, located in the main foyer of the hospital, provides a range of over-the-counter medicines and products, as well as pharmacy services for hospital staff, outpatients and visitors. We pride ourselves on being an employer of choice, where everyone matters.

The Pharmacy is open Monday-Friday (09:00 – 18:00) and Saturday mornings (09:00 – 13:00).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

As a GPhC registered Superintendent Pharmacist, part of your role will include:

  • Clinical screening and accuracy checking of medication prescribed to  the patients
  • Integral in providing a positive experience for all patients and staff  visiting the pharmacy
  • Offering advice on dosages, side effects and other aspects of drug interaction
  • Maintaining accurate and detailed records of all medications processed through the pharmacy
  • Delivering community healthcare services such as prescription collection and delivery
  • Working with the team to maintain a clean, professional and patient-friendly workplace
  • Manage, supervise and train pharmacy support staff
  • Comply with the professional and legal requirements and standards and policies of UHS Pharmacy Ltd
  • Keep up to date with current pharmacy practice, new drugs and their uses

Experience and Skills 

  • Master’s degree in pharmacy or equivalent.
  • General Pharmaceutical Council registration as a practising pharmacist.
  • Postgraduate qualification in clinical pharmacy or equivalent experiential practice.
  • Management training/qualification or equivalent experience.

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Experience of managing and leading a community pharmacy business or hospital pharmacy department.
  • ≥ 6 years’ considerable work experience
  • Experience of managing a team and service.
  • Experience of training staff.
  • Evidence of being able to manage change.
  • Knowledge and experience of UK Tax system regarding VAT
  • Sound knowledge of Pharmacy law, ethics, and practice
  • Track record of critical evaluation skills applied in practice.
  • Proven track record of service development and project management.
  • Highly developed negotiation, influencing and interrogative skills.
Desirable criteria
  • Both community pharmacy and hospital pharmacy experience.
  • Experience of robotic dispensing.
  • Awareness of arrangements for homecare medicines.
  • Management of a service contract
