Job overview

We have an exciting opportunity for a motivated and enthusiastic cardiac physiologist to join our team in the Non-Invasive and Echocardiography areas. We are looking for someone who has a keen interest in echocardiography and clinical testing in non-invasive cardiology. A strong background knowledge in cardiac physiology is essential to becoming a skilled cardiac physiologist.

We are a vibrant and diverse BSE-accredited department with developing non-invasive cardiology services. Our team are involved in a wide range of specialist services including paediatric and adult congenital. We pride ourselves on actively supporting continual professional development through educational and mentoring sessions.

Our department operates Monday to Saturday. You may be asked to participate in Saturday and bank holiday working on a rotational basis, as well as off-site working in community centres

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

What you’ll do:
 
The post will be evenly split between echocardiography and non-invasive cardiology:
Your non-invasive cardiology commitment will give you an opportunity to strengthen your core skills as a cardiac physiologist in areas such as Holter analysis, exercise and pharmacological stress testing, tilt testing, cardiopulmonary exercise testing and stress echocardiography, working towards leading in one of these specialist areas. 
In echocardiography you will receive practical and theoretical training to develop your transthoracic echocardiography skills with the aim to be working towards British Society of Echocardiography adult transthoracic accreditation
  
Your key roles will be: 
 
•    Learning to perform and report adult transthoracic echocardiograms. 
•    Working towards local sign off to scan and report adult transthoracic echocardiograms.  
•    Working towards BSE accreditation in transthoracic echocardiography.  
•    Working towards sign off as second person in Non Invasive cardiology clinical testing, adult stress testing, paediatric stress testing, CPET and tilt testing
•    Have the opportunity to work towards leading in one of these areas of Non Invasive Cardiology 
•    Working towards independent tape analysis through a sign off process with the support of a 3-day tape analysis course 
•    Working towards sign off for stress echo and pharmacological stress testing, working independently with a doctor

•    The ability and motivation to carry out self-directed learning in addition to the educational opportunities provided by the department. 
•    Enthusiasm for echocardiography and non-invasive testing.
•    Excellent team player. 
The post will be particularly suited to PTP students that have enjoyed their echocardiography time on placement, and have a passion for Non Invasive clinical testing and would like to focus on these areas of cardiac physiology post qualification with a view to progressing into a more specialist role.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • BSc in Clinical Physiology
  • Immediate Life Support qualified
Desirable criteria
  • Working toward or having RCCP voluntary registration

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad knowledge of a wide range of tests and techniques performed by Cardiac Physiologists
  • Good understanding of the overall service requirements and of own role in the maintenance of an efficient service
  • Good IT skills – able to record results into a range of databases
Desirable criteria
  • Some experience in teaching and training

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Excellent communication skills at all levels internal and external to the department
  • Able to prioritise own workload and that of junior staff
  • Able to act on own initiative and work independently with consideration to the team working efficiently
  • Self-motivated and effective when working under pressure
  • Excellent patient manner and communication, to create a relaxed environment in order to obtain the best quality results from any test performed
  • To perform tests with an appreciation of individual patient needs, age, clinical condition, emotional state and cultural differences
  • Able to analyse tests, assessing test results against acceptability criteria
