Job overview

An opportunity has arisen for a Sister/Charge Nurse role in the cardiac catheter labs, to support service expansion. In this role you will be expected to progress the expansion of the service, supporting the current nursing management within the catheter labs .

The catheter labs run 08:00 – 18:00 5 days per week, with out of hours covered by an on-call service. It is expected that all qualified members of the team will partake in covering the on-call service.

There are 4 catheter labs and a hybrid theatre, with plans for a 5th lab to be opened in 2024 to support service expansion.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO

Successful candidates will work in the catheter labs, supporting all junior members of the team with their training and development. 
On a rotational daily basis, they will be the nurse in charge for the catheter labs. 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

The successful candidate will be an experienced catheter lab nurse.


Evidence of mentoring and training of junior staff within the Cath lab setting is expected.

Attendance at relevant regional and national meeting is encouraged.

Procedures in the catheter lab are constantly changing and evolving, an interest in and understanding of how research influences change, is essential.

Qualifications / training required

Essential criteria
  • 1st level registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC)
  • Degree level education or equivalent knowledge and skills gained through any combination of alternative study, or employment experience
  • A Speciality Qualification within CV&T for example in house course or equivalent
  • Certification as competent and signed off for valve preparation by valve manufacturer
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice. Provide evidence of:  Supporting a range of learners in practice  Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Intermediate Life Support training

Previous or relevant experience necessary

Essential criteria
  • Extensive experience at Band 5/equivalent in the speciality
  • Ward management experience
  • Mentorship experience
  • Experience in an acute hospital setting
  • Extensive proven Teaching and Assessing skills
Desirable criteria
  • Some insight into budget management
  • Appraisal skills
  • Experience in handling adverse events and complaints
  • Possession of a relevant mentorship qualification
  • Experience as an NMC sign off mentor or clinical practice assessor.
