Main duties of the job

We are pleased to be in the position to offer an 10.25PA locum Consultant Clinical Oncology post specialising in Breast and/or Urology Cancer (including Prostate Brachytherapy). Whilst the job plan outlined in the Job Description is a Breast & Urology job plan, other tumour sites combined with one of these two will be considered.

This is a post with a 10.25 PA job plan, but candidates wishing to work less than full time will be welcome to apply. 

The Clinical Oncology service based in Southampton provides a local and regional service; treating patients from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, further afield across Wessex, and also the Channel Islands. There is a collaborative approach with neighbouring Cancer Centres in Poole and Portsmouth, and active engagement in the Thames Valley and Wessex Operational Delivery Network (ODN).

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

You will work within the Clinical Oncology Team based at University Hospital Southampton providing a local and regional Oncology service. They will join a UHS-based team currently consisting of 4 substantive Urology Consultants plus 1 locum Consultant and 3 substantive Breast Consultants plus 1 Specialist and 1 locum Consultant. The role will cover the range of clinical oncology situations. By its nature there will be contribution to a wide range of related multidisciplinary teams. 

You will participate in the Southampton Clinical Oncology on call rota. This provides evening / night time telephone advice during the week and ward rounds on Saturday and Sunday with a frequency of approximately 1:16

 

There are 24 Consultant Clinical Oncologists and 4 SAS grade doctors working in the department. In addition, there are 10 Specialist Registrars who take part in the Wessex clinical oncology training programme.

 

The radiotherapy department has undergone major development and investment over the last few years. This has included replacement of all 6 Southampton Elekta linacs and incorporating and matching the Elekta Linac on the Basingstoke Hospital site (North Hampshire Hospitals) as a satellite unit. 2 Southampton linacs have Exac Trac® and Hexa POD® couch for SRS and Head and neck cancer treatments. A superficial/orthovoltage facility is also available in Southampton for skin treatment.

 

UHS has strong links with the University of Southampton and there will be opportunities to become involved in collaborative research, clinical trials and medical student teaching.

 

WHAT WE’RE LOOKING FOR

Applicants should have CCT in Clinical Oncology. Consideration will also be given to applicants in the 6 months before their CCT or with consultant level experience.

Where equivalent qualifications or experience are being offered, it is essential that candidates should provide confirmation of this from the relevant College or Faculty in the United Kingdom and attach the confirmation to your application.

Qualifications and training

Essential criteria
  • GMC Registration
  • MRCP or equivalent
  • CCT in Clinical Oncology (including up to 6 months before CCT) or appropriate qualifications and experience
Desirable criteria
  • Recognised training in academic oncology with postgraduate qualification
  • Prostate Brachytherapy experience

Previous or relevant experience

Essential criteria
  • Broad experience in Clinical Oncology including breast and urological malignancies
  • Experience of multidisciplinary team working
  • Experience in the management of breast and/or urological cancers
Desirable criteria
  • Significant experience in Oncology research
  • Experience of working within the NHS
  • Teaching experience
