Main duties of the job

You will be supporting the Clinical Coding Manager and Clinical Coding Operational Lead in ensuring effective service delivery for the department.

The role will involve responsibilities for mentoring and training of Trainee Clinical Coders, day to day supervision of the Clinical Coding Team, ensuring all monthly mandated coding deadlines are met and helping to provide the Trust with high quality coded data. 

You will collaborate with multiple teams, including the clinical teams and other relevant personnel to ensure coding accuracy and integrity are maintained at the highest level.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Act as a line manager for effective staff leadership in relation to day-to-day management of the teams’ workloads, staff annual leave requests, sickness monitoring and individual performance reviews (IPR’s).

Provide training and mentorship to the clinical coding team members, where checking, validating and informal auditing may be necessary

To communicate complex coding standards, rules and conventions to clinical coding staff and the wider Trust. Presenting this information to large staff groups such as the Junior Doctor inductions.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Degree level qualification, or equivalent experience
  • ACC Qualified Clinical Coder or equivalent experience
  • Current and valid Clinical Coding Standards Refresher Course
  • Auditing experience
  • Management qualification (foundation management skills) or equivalent experience
  • Expert knowledge in medical terminology and anatomy and physiology
  • Extensive experience coding across a wide range of specialities
  • Comprehensive knowledge of using Clinical Coding rules and conventions, within the ICD10 and OPCS-4 Classifications
  • Experience of being a lead Clinical Coder for a speciality
  • Ability to communicate with all levels of staff
  • Experience of mentoring other Clinical Coders
  • Proven ability to meet individual and team deadlines
  • Effective written and spoken communication skills
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge of Healthcare Resource Groups and how accurate clinical coding benefits the Trust
  • Approved Clinical Coder Auditor Status
