Main duties of the job

The Pharmacy Logistics Department at University Hospital Southampton have opportunities for enthusiastic, reliable and friendly individuals who can work accurately as part of a supportive team.
The main function of the role is to manage stock medicines for wards and units by visiting different areas of the hospital.  This includes tasks such as ordering, stock rotation and expiry monitoring using IT systems.  This role involves liaising regularly with pharmacy and ward staff but doesn't involve direct patient contact.  As part of the larger pharmacy team we are constantly evolving to meet service demand.
This is a fantastic opportunity for anyone wanting to pursue a career in pharmacy.  You will be trained in-house, gaining competencies in aspects of pharmacy top up and distribution work.  There will be the opportunity to gain a recognised accredited qualification in pharmacy supply if desire, but this is not essential for the role.
We are a friendly diverse team of approximately 20 people working together aiming to provide the best possible service.

The main tasks of the role are:

Stock management
Ward Based stock control
Keeping drug cupboards tidy and organised
Supporting projects to improve the service.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

This is a physically demanding role based in a ward and store environment.  Work on ward areas does not involve patient contact.  You will be trained in-house gaining competencies in aspects of pharmacy top up and distribution work.  There may be the opportunity to gain a recognised accredited qualification in Pharmacy supply if desired but it is not essential for the role.

We are looking for friendly and reliable  applicants.  You will need to have:

The ability to work in a team and independently;
Accurate working with attention to detail;
Good proven standard of numeracy and literacy;
IT skills;
A good standard of health, fitness and mobility as this work can be strenuous with periods of repetitive lifting at times; and
Good written and verbal communication skills.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Health and physical abilities sufficient for the post (if necessary, with reasonable adjustments with respect to the Equality Act/Disability Discrimination Act).
  • Required to lift and handle packages, weighing up to 15kg on a repetitive basis. (Reasonable adjustment may be made) Required to move pallets weighing between 500 and 600kg using an unpowered pallet truck daily (Receipts posts only)
  • Must be able to commit to completing ‘in-house’ training programme within 6 months of starting. Opportunities to progress are available but may require additional qualifications to meet eligibility criteria to undertake additional qualifications
  • Must be able to work late evenings, bank holidays and weekend working according to rota requirements
Desirable criteria
  • GCSE’s or equivalent grades A* - C or 4-9 in English and Maths (If qualifications gained outside the UK evidence of equivalent standards must be demonstrated at interview)
  • GCSEs in science-based or other role specific relevant subjects
  • Previous pharmacy or laboratory experience (hospital, community or industry)
  • Previous experience in health or social care (if not pharmacy)
  • Experience in stock control i.e., receiving, maintaining and / or issuing stock
  • Clinical trials or research experience (Clinical trials only)
  • Use of till and / or handling money in a work environment (RSH posts only)
