This post is appointed on a fixed-term basis for the primary purpose of providing structured training and supervised clinical development. While the postholder will contribute to service delivery, the overarching purpose of the post is to provide defined educational opportunities, supervised clinical practice, and experience aligned to the relevant specialty training curriculum

Main duties of the job

The Wessex Neurological Centre is a tertiary centre of excellence providing neurological care in a variety of neurology subspecialties. Exposure will be broad, across neurology and neurosurgery, providing a good basis for early training. 


You will gather clinical neuroscience experience by working within the clinical team, ensuring the medical supervision and safety of care of the ward-based neurology and neurosurgical patients. 


The post will be 100% clinical time will be spent providing clinical support in the Wessex Neurological Centre (WNC) under the supervision of Dr R Eshita and other neurology consultants.

Exposure will be broad, across neurology and neurosurgery, providing a good basis for early training. Activities will include looking after inpatients as part of consultant-led teams, and participating in audit, the weekly academic programme and continuing professional education. You will be expected to attend a weekly consultant-led teaching session. There will be opportunity to attend weekly neurology outpatients and see neurology outpatients under supervision for training purposes.
The post would be suitable for those aiming to develop a clinical career in the clinical neurosciences.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The emphasis of the job is the day-to-day medical management of inpatients, supervised by the Consultant and Specialist Registrar, with the following aims:    
1.    To gain full competence in the ward-based assessment and emergency management of neurology and neurosurgical inpatients, admitted for acute illness or programmed management.
2.    To admit and assess patients admitted to the unit during weekly ward cover and out of hours.
3.    To take part in an 8-10 doctor full shift rota providing junior medical cover in the Wessex Neurological Centre, covering Neurological and Neurosurgical wards.

ADDITIONAL INFORMATION  
Appointment will be made under local contractual terms and conditions of service for Trust appointed fellow doctors and dentists.  Applicants requiring Skilled Worker sponsorship should ensure they meet the Home Office application criteria prior to submitting an application. 

Successful candidates will have an educational framework equivalent to training grade doctors, and there will be a named educational supervisor assigned at the start of the post. The opportunity for Continued Professional Development (CPD) is highly supported and encouraged by the Trust, with options available to take study leave. 

Grades for Trust appointed fellows will be paid a basic salary at a nodal pay point linked to the grade, at the rate set out in the National Medical and Dental pay circular. Basic salary plus any additional remuneration (as applicable) for hours set out in the doctors work schedule (e.g. additional hours, weekend allowance, and any hours which attract enhanced pay)

Qualifications, Training & Experience

Essential criteria
  • MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
  • GMC registration with a licence to practise
  • Appropriate knowledge base, and ability to apply sound clinical judgement to problems (
  • Successful completion of a Foundation Programme or equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Research degree
  • MRCP (UK) or equivalent
  • Completion of Core Medical Training or equivalent
  • Additional experience in Neurology

Aptitudes and skills

Essential criteria
