Main duties of the job

As a Trainee Advanced Practitioner (ACP) you are expected to work in conjunction with the 4 pillars of Advanced Practice as outlined in the HEE Multi-professional Framework (2017)

This is a training post in which the practitioner will deliver, under the supervision of an Advanced Clinical Practitioner or Designated Medical Practitioner (DMP), an advanced level of clinical practice within the speciality area. 

The trainee ACP will develop the knowledge and skills required to provide expert clinical management and care to patients within the speciality area. 

The trainee ACP will complete a clinical portfolio, providing evidence of the HEE capabilities for advanced clinical practice and speciality-specific competencies in practice whilst working towards a recognised MSc in Advanced Clinical Practice.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

During MSc training, the Trainee ACP will be employed at Band 7. The neonatal modular elements of the MSc programme can be completed over one or two years, depending on individual preference. Once the modular elements are complete, the post holder will undertake a minimum of three months supernumerary on the Tier 1 SHO roster before formally joining the roster. 

Completion of the full MSc is a requirement of the role and completion of the dissertation module is non-negotiable. Upon successful completion of the full MSc and demonstration of competence, including submission of evidence to a review panel, the post holder will progress to Band 8a. With continued development and demonstration of competence as a qualified ACP, there will be opportunity to progression to the Tier 2 Registrar rota, including participation in the regional neonatal transport service.

Essential Criteria:
•    Registered nurse on relevant part of NMC register
•    Healthcare degree with pass mark of 2:2 or higher
•    Neonatal speciality training certification
•    Significant experience working within neonatal intensive care 
•    Evidence of mentorship / coaching / education qualification or Supporting Learners in Practice
•    Evidence of ongoing professional development
•    Neonatal Life Support qualification
•    Experience of educating others in formal / informal setting
•    Awareness of trust initiatives / pressures
•    Experience of undertaking clinical audit
•    Basic computer / keyboard skills

Desirable criteria:
•    Education at Masters’ level 
•    Leadership qualification or significant equivalent experience
•    Band 6 experience in neonates
•    Additional resuscitation qualification i.e. ARNI, GIC 
•    Evidence of further speciality competence / training
•    Evidence of nursing practice development and management of change
•    Research awareness and experience 
•    Knowledge of undergraduate education
•    Knowledge of wider healthcare agenda

Qualifications, knowledge and experience

Essential criteria
  • Registered Healthcare Professional on relevant part of NMC / HCPC register
  • Completion of Healthcare Degree (or equivalent - Minimum 120 credits at L6 or evidence of Masters level study)
  • Committed and eligible for participation in and completion of MSc in area of speciality
  • Higher Education Institute approved course in supporting learners in practice or the ability to Provide evidence of: • Supporting a range of learners in practice • Supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
  • Evidence of on-going personal and professional development
  • Basic keyboard skills with knowledge of Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Significant Post Registration experience within chosen specialty
  • Broad awareness of wider Trust initiatives / pressures
  • Coaching/leadership experience
Desirable criteria
  • Completion of HTPA Competencies
  • Independent Non-Medical Prescribing Qualification
  • ILS trained
  • Evidence of ability to change or initiate practice
  • Registered on MSc Pathway as an experienced practitioner
  • Further study at Level 7 within relevant pathway
  • Leadership qualification (RCN, LDC, Edward Jenner, Elizabeth Garret Anderson, Nye Bevan)
  • Maths and English Level 2 or have recognised equivalence from the ENIC process
