Main duties of the job
The Acute Oncology Service is looking for enthusiastic and motivated Band 6 to join our dynamic and innovative team. We are recruiting for one permanent Band 6 position, with the potential for an additional 9-month Band 6 secondment.
This is an exciting opportunity for confident leaders who thrive in a fast-paced emergency environment and are passionate about delivering outstanding care to patients experiencing complications of cancer or its treatment.
You will be joining one of the largest Acute Oncology Units in the UK. Our service operates 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, providing rapid front-door assessment, treatment and specialist support for patients presenting with oncological emergencies and treatment-related toxicities.
This role also offers the opportunity to develop as a UKONS Telephone Triage Nurse, providing expert telephone assessment and directing patients to the most appropriate care pathways.
Reporting to the Ward Leader and Matron, you will be supported to develop your leadership skills while contributing to service innovation, education, quality improvement and the future development of Acute Oncology.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
As a Band 6, you will provide clinical leadership, coordinate the day-to-day running of the Acute Oncology Unit, support and develop junior staff, and contribute to the ongoing improvement of the service.
You will be forward-thinking, innovative, able to delegate effectively, and committed to delivering high-quality, patient-centred care.
Working alongside consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team, you will play a key role in ensuring patients receive timely, safe and effective care while supporting the Trust's commitment to delivering excellent cancer services.
Provide professional clinical and operational leadership, acting as a role model and supporting the delivery of safe, high-quality, patient-centred care.
Assess, plan, implement and evaluate individualised nursing care for patients presenting with oncological emergencies and complications of cancer and its treatment.
Coordinate the day-to-day running of the Acute Oncology Unit, including admissions, patient flow, bed management and workforce allocation to ensure the safe and effective delivery of care.
Maintain accurate, timely and comprehensive patient records, ensuring compliance with Trust policies, professional standards and regulatory requirements.
Promote effective multidisciplinary working by building strong relationships with consultants, Advanced Clinical Practitioners and the wider multidisciplinary team to deliver seamless patient care.
Support, supervise and develop junior staff and students, fostering a positive learning environment and a cohesive team culture.
Demonstrate excellent communication, organisational and decision-making skills, with the ability to prioritise workload, delegate appropriately and respond effectively to changing clinical demands.
Lead by example in promoting evidence-based practice, quality improvement and service innovation, ensuring care is informed by current research and best practice.
Contribute to the ongoing development of the Acute Oncology Service and support the delivery of Trust and national cancer priorities.
Develop specialist knowledge and skills through continuous professional development, including opportunities to complete UKONS Telephone Triage training and courses such as Introduction to Cancer Care and Fundamentals of Cancer Care.
Participate in the 24/7 rota, demonstrating flexibility to meet the needs of the service.

Qualifications, knowledge and experience
Essential criteria
- Qualified Nurse (Degree/Diploma)
- Registered nurse on appropriate part of the register
- Significant post registration experience / qualification / training, including experience and knowledge within relevant speciality
- Ward management experience
- Knowledge of current issues within acute Health Service
- Experience in an acute hospital setting
- Provide evidence of supporting / managing a range of learners in practice
- Provide evidence of supporting colleagues to promote effective learning in practice
Desirable criteria
- Experience in handling adverse events and complaints
- Appraisal skills
- Act in the role of Practice Assessor or supporting the progression of learners / supporting challenges as needed
