Main duties of the job

An exciting opportunity has arisen for a 1.0 WTE (37.5 hours/week) band 6 registered nurse to join our established Long Term Ventilation Team at University Hospital Southampton.   You will report to one of the band 7 clinical nurse specialists within the team.

The LTV service at UHS cares for a constantly growing, diverse population of children and young people within the Central South Coast region who require invasive or non-invasive ventilation.  Our aim is to initiate ventilation and discharge patients in a timely manner, enabling them to thrive at home.

You will provide direct patient care to children with complex care needs and their families.  You will be in involved in the initiation of ventilation, ongoing management and troubleshooting.   You will facilitate discharge, providing ongoing support for the child and their family at home.

You will be responsible for teaching key skills of ventilation and sleep monitoring to staff and families as required.

Working for our organisation

University Hospital Southampton is one of England's largest acute teaching Trusts, offering a wide range of learning and development opportunities to support your career aspirations.

Located on the south coast with an international airport and direct rail links to London, Southampton offers an ideal setting to live and work, with the New Forest, South Downs and Jurassic Coast.

We believe that using technology wisely shows strong time management and commitment to innovation. However, personalising your recruitment application to highlight your unique skills and experiences is crucial. Relying too heavily on generic, AI-generated content instead of drawing from your own strengths and accomplishments may lead to your application being rejected if multiple candidates present identical or similar information.

At UHS, we’re committed to providing a flexible working environment where possible. Whether you are balancing family, study, or your wellbeing with your career, we want to support you so you can help our patients.

At UHS, we proudly champion individuality, recognising that outstanding care is only possible with a diverse, inclusive team. We’re committed to creating an anti-racist, anti-discriminatory environment where everyone feels valued, safe, and empowered to make a meaningful impact in our communities. We welcome applicants of all backgrounds, identities, and experiences to join us in building a healthcare community where everyone can belong, thrive, and contribute.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

You will need to work well in a team and have excellent communication skills, whilst also being able to work autonomously.

You will  be required to undertake night shifts, running titration nights and analysing sleep studies.

There will be an expectation that you will attend consultant follow up clinics at UHS and also provide telephone support for families in the form of telephone clinics.

Ideally, you will have clinical experience and expertise in the highly specialist field of long term ventilation.

You will have an education role, supporting the provision of both formal and informal teaching.
