Clinical Education Fellow (Specialties specified within JD/PS)

NHS Medical & Dental: Local Appointment nodal point 3 (MT03)

Job overview

This is a fixed term appointment for a period of one year based wholly at Wye Valley NHS Trust in Hereford where the successful applicant will join our friendly and enthusiastic education team whilst also spending half of their time in a clinical specialty: we are offering junior educational fellow posts at FY3+ level in Geriatric Medicine, Cardiology, Dermatology, Diabetes & Endocrinology, Acute Medicine, Plastic Surgery Respiratory and General Surgery . Appointees in some specialties will be expected to participate in the out-of-hours on-call rota; please see the job description for more detail.

Please note: This vacancy may close early due to high volume of applications.

Main duties of the job

This post is designed to support development in medical education for the post-holder through planning and delivery of teaching to medical students, junior doctors and multidisciplinary teams, whilst maintaining and progressing with clinical experience within their own specialty. We will also encourage and financially support the successful candidate to complete a Postgraduate Certificate in Medical Education (or equivalent credits).

We offer Consultant-led opportunities with additional support to undertake management and leadership training, quality improvement projects, research, regional & national presentations and publication.

There is a fully equipped Simulation Suite including the 3G Sim Man, which provides a further dimension to medical teaching in Hereford plus a new multi-professional Clinical Skills and Simulation Academy. The Trust launched an Education Directorate in 2021 which supports and promotes shared learning across professional groups. We receive students from the Universities of Birmingham, Aston and the Three Counties Medical School.

We have an extremely high number of Fellows who successfully use this year to springboard into competitive national training schemes, and are proud to have some of the best student feedback in the region.

Working for our organisation

Wye Valley NHS Trust is a member of an NHS Foundation Group with South Warwickshire NHS FT , the George Eliot Hospital NHS Trust and Worcestershire Acute Hospitals NHS Trust.

Located on the border with Wales in the shadow of the Black Mountains, we provide acute and community services across Herefordshire and into parts of Powys and run Hereford County Hospital and the community hospitals in Bromyard, Leominster and Ross-on-Wye.

We are a progressive and forward looking trust with ambitious plans to improve quality and integrate patient pathways through close collaborative working with our partners to deliver the quality of care we’d want for our family and friends.

More than 3,500 people work for the Trust – they tell us it’s a great place to work, blending the busyness of a DGH with the benefits of working in a beautiful rural and unspoilt county like Herefordshire.

We can offer a great work-life balance and have a fine tradition of working with staff to help them achieve their full potential.

Russell Hardy, Trust Chairman: “The strength of the Trust is its amazing staff; a great place to work, a great place to develop your career and a great place to reach your potential.”

Our values - Care, Accountability, Respect and Excellence - are at the heart of all we do. We believe in providing the right care in the right place at the right time…all the time.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Wye Valley NHS Trust is an associated teaching hospital of both the University of Birmingham Medical School and the University of Aston Medical School. From September 2023 we also started receiving students from the Three Counties Medical School (TCMS). We also accept Physician Associate students from the University of Worcester.

The Head of Academy, Dr Lisa Penny, leads a team of Senior Academy Tutors and Education Fellows, including two senior Simulation Fellows and non-medical education fellows. The Academy has been highly praised for its friendly atmosphere and has the lowest student: teacher and student: patient ratios in the West Midlands ensuring good access to clinical teaching.
