THIS POST IS PART-TIME.
We are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and highly motivated Assistant Psychologist to join our welcoming and psychologically-minded team within the Early Memory Diagnosis and Support Service (EMDASS) in Hertfordshire. This post is part-time (18.75 hours per week, 0.5 FTE) and is based in the Northwest (Hemel Hempstead) of the county. Travel across the county may be required dependent on the needs of the service.

This post offers an excellent opportunity to gain experience working alongside qualified Clinical Psychologists and other members of a skilled multi-disciplinary team. The successful candidate will support the delivery of high-quality psychological services, including contributing to the facilitation of groups for people who experience mild memory problems, supporting with neuropsychological assessment (the assessment of dementia and other neurodegenerative conditions) and formulation, and assisting in the development of psychologically-informed interventions.

The ideal candidate will share our values of offering compassionate and trauma-informed services and will demonstrate a strong interest in working with older people or other vulnerable client groups. There will be opportunities to support audit, service evaluation, research, and development projects, as well as to take part in training and team reflective practice.

Main duties of the job

The postholder will:

  • Undertake psychological assessments under supervision, including supporting the administration, scoring, and interpretation of standardised neuropsychological and other psychological measures
  • Support the preparation of psychological reports and psycho-educational materials
  • Assist in the delivery of neuropsychologically-informed groups and interventions for people living with memory difficulties, and their families
  • Contribute to service development through audit, data collection, research, and evaluation projects
  • Liaise effectively with colleagues within multi-disciplinary teams, demonstrating excellent communication and teamwork skills
  • Maintain accurate clinical records in accordance with Trust and professional standards
  • Manage tasks and responsibilities set by the supervising Clinical Psychologist, whilst working independently on a day-to-day basis within agreed frameworks
  • Participate in regular supervision and CPD opportunities to support professional development.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Main responsibilities

  • Assist qualified Clinical Psychologists in the delivery of specialist psychological services for older people
  • Undertake psychological assessments using a variety of methods (tests, self-report measures, rating scales, structured interviews, observations etc.)
  • Support in the analysis and reporting of neuropsychological data
  • Assist in the delivery of group-based and individual interventions that are neuropsychologically-informed, under supervision
  • Contribute to the development and evaluation of intervention packages for older people and their families
  • Support audit and service evaluation activities to enhance the quality and effectiveness of services
  • Undertake appropriate CPD and training activities relevant to the role
  • Contribute to liaison between Psychology and the wider MDT, ensuring effective and compassionate care for service users.

Clinical responsibility

  • Work under the supervision of Clinical Psychologists, adhering to professional guidelines and service policies
  • Maintain high standards of record-keeping and data management
  • Take responsibility for organising workload to meet agreed goals and deadlines
  • Demonstrate the ability to work empathetically and sensitively with people and their families, showing strong communication and interpersonal skills.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Honours degree in psychology, 2:1 or above
  • Eligibility for graduate membership of the British A Psychological Society (BPS)

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Undergraduate research experience
  • Experience of work with older people or other vulnerable client groups
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of working with older people
  • Experience of the use of neuropsychological assessments
  • Experience of the application of psychological principles in health or social service settings, preferably through work within a clinical psychology department
  • Experience of working within a multi-cultural framework
  • Experience of working with people with dementia

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication and presentation skills, both orally and in writing
  • Able to provide and receive complex and sensitive information
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with individual clients who may have difficulties with communication and understanding
  • Ability to work and communicate with relative, carers and a range of other professionals
  • Familiarity with computing technology, including keyboard skills, and the use of word processing, e-mail and internet software
Desirable criteria
  • Spreadsheet and data analysis
  • Ability to organise data collection and analysis for service evaluation projects
