Job overview

We are recruiting for a Research Nurse who shares our vision to be trusted to provide consistently outstanding care and exemplary service to our patients.

Here at Mount Vernon Cancer Centre, our Research Nurses recruit patients to studies via multiple local DGH teams as well as from within the Cancer Centre. As well as promoting studies to our referral hospitals and recruiting and coordinating the care of our trial participants,  you will also administer some of the research drugs. You may be required to take responsibility for the safe administration of experimental drugs and for monitoring the expected and unexpected side effects of drugs and other treatment modalities.

Main duties of the job

Screen & identify patients eligible for clinical trials and to maintain detailed knowledge of the protocols for the clinical trials associated with the designated site-specific groups. 

To attend relevant outpatient clinics to assist with recruitment, to monitor the progress, and to collect data of patients involved in clinical trials. To attend inpatients involved in clinical trials as necessary. 

To act as a contact point and coordinator for patients requiring information and support and to refer patients/families on to other professional/agencies as appropriate.

Assist in the provision of background information about potential clinical trials to obtain approvals from Research Governance and Local Ethics Committees.

To be involved in protocol review, advising regarding specialised equipment and resources required to undertake the trial and to ensure ethical issues are adequately addressed. 

To be involved in clinical trial protocol design and development, including being responsible for high quality patient information sheets. 

Contributes to the financial processes of planning, running and closing clinical research studies.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

ENHT is seeking to maintain and expand the Mount Vernon Cancer Centre staff as we move to an exciting new future.

In addition, you will receive a High Cost Area Supplement of 15% of your basic salary, subject to a minimum payment of £4,314 and a maximum payment of £5,436 per annum pro rata.

Qualifications/Training

Essential criteria
  • Registered Nurse
  • Post graduate level qualification/courses or equivalent experience within research and /or a related field
  • Evidence of CPD and maintenance of PDP
  • Willingness to undertake training as appropriate for role.

Previous Experience

Essential criteria
  • Experience of working with patients and families within relevant clinical areas in the NHS environment
  • Evidence of research activity
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in writing and verbally.
  • Proven ability to work under pressure.
  • Proven effectiveness as working as part of a multidisciplinary team
  • Experience of formal/informal teaching
  • Experience of explaining complex concepts to patients in a clear and simplified manner
  • Experience of running concurrent research studies in a healthcare setting with minimal supervision/clinical trials experience.
Desirable criteria
  • Experience of running concurrent research studies in a healthcare setting with minimal supervision/clinical trials experience
  • Experience related to information retrieval and research application

  • Excellent organisational and time management skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to work cross boundaries integrating with multidisciplinary staff

  • Computer literate with Microsoft Office software. (including word, Excel)
  • Phlebotomy/cannulation skills.
  • Sample preparation/transportation.
  • Demonstrates evidence ability to take charge and delegate duties

Knowledge

  • Awareness of research governance issues
  • Awareness of research design and methods; understanding of the analytical process
  • Proven knowledge of ICH GCP and current legislation
