Service Manager - Acute and Urgent Care  Division

We are looking to appoint an exceptional leaders with a significant level of operational management experience in health or social care, to take the role of Service Manager (8B) within Acute and Urgent Care Division.

This is an exciting opportunity for an enthusiastic, dedicated, person-focused and experienced individual to apply to work in our team.

The post holders will have a proven track record in operational leadership and should have the ability to lead by example, motivate and empower
others and will play a fundamental role in ensuring effective outcomes and high quality care for those using our acute mental health services in
Hertfordshire.

By inspiring a culture of high performance and continuous quality improvement in teams, the post holder will ensure the sustained
provision of high quality services and standards for our service users, their carers and families.

Main duties of the job

The successful candidate will: 

  • develop new ways of working
  • be a strong leader to help us achieve our vision
  • have demonstrable management experience within the NHS or related fields
  • have significant experience of working with clinicians and multi-disciplinary teams to achieve service improvement
  • contribute to the overall strategic direction and delivery of adult mental health services within the county as a whole
  • be required to work both independently, using initiative, and alongside professional leads, clinical colleagues, Trust senior
    managers and key partner organisations.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • To manage the allocated service within the Division.
  • Manage the service in close consultation with and under the direction of the service line Clinical Lead.
  • Support the development of the Clinical Services Strategy and annual business plan for the service.
  • Ensure patient safety and service quality excellence within the service.
  • Deliver agreed performance targets within the service.
  • Support the Trust’s strategy to continuously develop line management teams’ capabilities.
  • Work with corporate colleagues to secure the management information requirements necessary for the effective management of the service.
  • Manage both direct and indirect costs and overheads relating to the service.
  • Understand the local and wider health economy in which the service operates.
  • Identify and exploit new business and service development opportunities regarding the service.
  • Maximise income streams and manage costs in relation to levels of available income.
  • Work in a multi-disciplinary way with operational leads and colleagues to manage and deliver clinically safe and effective services.
  • Achieve earned autonomy and freedoms for the service in accordance with the Trust’s management policies by demonstrating sustained service management capability and excellent levels of performance.
  • Work flexibly to support the achievement of the division’s strategic agenda and provide cover in times of absence.

QUALIFICATIONS/EDUCATION/TRAINING

Essential criteria
  • First degree/relevant qualification in clinical or social care
  • Master’s Degree or career experience equivalent
Desirable criteria
  • Registration with relevant professional body, e.g. HPC, GSCC, GMC etc
  • Additional qualifications in management

EXPERIENCE

Essential criteria
  • Significant health and/or social care experience at senior management level in any relevant discipline
  • Significant experience of clinical governance and quality assurance processes
  • Demonstrable experience of risk management, clinical audit, clinical effectiveness and information governance processes
  • Experience of project planning and service development
Desirable criteria
  • Experience as a service user and / or carer
  • Experience of research governance processes

SKILLS/KNOWLEDGE/ABILITY

Essential criteria
  • Understanding of current government and health and social care strategy and policy in respect of integrated governance and quality standards
  • Specialist knowledge of mental health/learning disability quality and clinical governance processes
  • Good interpersonal and influencing skills.
