East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust

Consultant in Urgent Care Ophthalmology with an interest in Medical Retina

Applications are invited for a Consultant Urgent Care Ophthalmologist with a special interest in Medical Retina. This is a substantive appointment based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage, with clinics at the New QEII Hospital at Welwyn Garden City and Hertford County Hospital. Candidates are sought with suitable experience and will be required to manage services for general ophthalmology.

This is an excellent opportunity within the Ophthalmology department at East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust. The Sub-Regional Eye Unit consists of outpatient facilities at three sites, Lister Treatment Centre (LTC), New QEII Hospital and Hertford County Hospital. The theatre complex is based at the Lister Treatment Centre and fully equipped with state of the art equipment for ophthalmic surgery. There is an Urgent Eye Clinic based at the LTC as well.

The Eye Unit is extremely busy with 6,000 new patients and 21,000 follow-up visits per year, carrying out some 3,500 surgical procedures per year. There are well-established medical retina clinics and a thriving Diabetic Retinal Screening Programme

Although near London, Welwyn Garden City and Stevenage are in rural settings and well served by rail and road. There is a wide choice of housing, good schools and excellent leisure facilities.

Following the investment of £150 million in major new facilities at the Lister, along with a £30 million New QEII hospital built by the local clinical commissioning group, the East and North Hertfordshire NHS Trust has brought together all its specialist emergency and inpatient services at the Stevenage hospital. Our state-of–the-art clinical facilities include a major new Emergency Department, the Hertfordshire Cardiology Centre (which includes a 24/7 PPCI service), new scanning centre, McMillan chemotherapy unit, ward, endoscopy and theatre blocks.

The Trust has a comprehensive programme of leadership mentoring available for newly qualified Consultants. Opportunities are also available to other Consultant appointees to play an active part in the programme.

Applicants must be on the Specialist Register, or be within 6 months of doing so, at the time of interview. Applications from those wishing to work part-time or job share are welcomed.
