Job overview
The integrated Musculoskeletal Service is looking to recruit an enthusiastic and dynamic hand therapist ( OT or PT ) to join our hand therapy team based at Lister Hospital in Stevenage.
A developmental from Band 5 to Band 6 or secondment will be considered for the right applicant.
The post holder will carry out assessment, intervention, including splinting and rehabilitation, and evaluation of hand therapy patients using a variety of tools and techniques.
Trauma referrals are received daily from hand clinics and Consultant teams within our Hand Therapy Unit. You will be seeing patients with a variety of acute and chronic conditions.
We are looking for sound clinical reasoning and communication skills, and an ability to work well within a team.
You will have regular informal/formal supervision with experienced senior therapists and will work as part of the wider community Musculoskeletal Service.
You must hold a full valid driving licence and access to a car to use regularly for business purposes is essential (unless you have a disability as defined by the Equality Act 2010).

- To assist in the formulation of clinical diagnosis and treatment indicated and maintain records as an autonomous practitioner
- To hold responsibility for own case load. Supervision taking the form of regular one to one sessions with the line manager, informal daily supervision, formal training and clinical reasoning sessions, peer review, case conferences and reflective practice. Access to advice and support from a senior hand therapist is available on a regular basis
- To undertake evidence-based audit and research projects to develop and enhance personal and team's clinical practice; to make suggestions to Clinical Lead/Head of Service for changes to practice by the team; to assist in the implementation of specific changes to practice; to contribute to the preparation of service protocols
- To undertake all aspects of clinical duties as an autonomous practitioner

· To provide specialised assessment and treatment for patients within Hands, Plastics, and to provide expert advice, guidance and information to health and social care professionals, carers and relatives and other non-professionals.

Essential criteria
- • Degree/Diploma in Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy • HPC Registration • Evidence of learning • Attendance at courses relevant to speciality
- • Relevant NHS/Social Services post registration experience covering 1/2 rotations • Evidence of multi-disciplinary Team working • Evidence of Planning, delivering and evaluating Occupational Therapy / Physiotherapy process • Knowledge of /use of appropriate standardised assessment tools
- • Evidence of clinical reasoning • Knowledge of anatomy and physiology related to Hands, • Ability to identify own development needs and set Personal Development objectives • Ability to problem solve, set treatment goals and clinically reason. • Evidence of involvement in-service development & improvement, in collaboration with Team Leads. • Excellent verbal and written communication skills • To be able to identify own professional limitations and seek senior advice when appropriate • Ability to use information Technology including E-mail, Word & Power Point
- • High level of interest in Hands injuries, splinting and rehabilitation. • Commitment to personal, professional and service development. • Ability to establish excellent rapport with patients and members of the multi-disciplinary team • Ability to be adaptable and flexible to meet demands of and change in service. • Ability to reflect on and adapt practice • Ability to provide immediate/rapid response and work under high pressure. • Physical fitness to undertake activities required in clinical area. • Excellent time management and organisational skills

You must have appropriate UK professional registration.
