Job overview
A full-time opportunity has become available for a motivated and adaptable Clinical Navigator to support the Acute Oncology Team at Watford General Hospital.
The post-holder will provide a high quality service to the team which will comprise of mostly administrative work to supporting the co-ordination of the non-clinical aspects of the service, including scheduling/attending meetings with minute taking, data and office management as well as assisting and supporting the team with internal and external service reviews. There will be regular contact with people affected by cancer, including signposting of patients via the telephone to ensure effective support along their pathway as well as co-ordination of investigations and results.

Main duties of the job
The post holder will be required to provide some administrative/signposting support to the wider ‘Cancer Tumour Site Specific Clinical Nurse Specialist Team’.
The successful post holder will need to be able to demonstrate good interpersonal and communication skills and have confidence in communicating with staff at all levels within the organisation as well as patients and families.
This includes feeling comfortable in managing information related to cancer patients and frequently hearing some potentially distressing information about the cancer patient journey.
There will be a requirement to deal with telephone enquiries, recording and prioritising messages and taking the necessary action to ensure good communications, in an appropriately confidential manner.

Proven administration skills and a sound working knowledge of IT systems are essential.
As a team player, you’ll be able to prioritise your work in order to meet deadlines and require minimal supervision on a daily basis.

Education and qualifications
Essential criteria
- GCSE English Language and mathematics.
- (Grades A-C) or equivalent.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of continued role development.
- Willingness to undertake learning and development courses.
- Coaching or teaching qualification.
- NVQ4 or NVQ3 plus additional training to diploma level, or equivalent through short courses.
- Communication course.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- Knowledge and understanding of working as a Health Care Assistant /understanding of t knowledge specific to this role.
- Demonstrate empathy and sensitivity.
Desirable criteria
- Understanding of Macmillan Cancer Support and other cancer charities roles across the UK
- Understanding of health and social care environment.
- Basic knowledge of cancer and cancer treatments.
- Advanced keyboard skills
- Knowledge of coaching/ teaching patients or carers.
Experience
Essential criteria
- Previous NHS experience or working in a clinical healthcare environment Working in/or with teams.
- Proven experience of working to deadlines and target.
- Experience of communicating complex instructions with sensitivity to patients and relatives.
- Experience of using a NHS Patient Administration system
Desirable criteria
- Previous experience of working with patients with a cancer diagnosis.
- Experience of coaching or teaching patients or carers.
