Job overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a highly motivated and adaptable Band 7 Diabetes Specialist Nurse to join our established Diabetes team within the acute trust tier of our integrated Diabetes service.

You will join a team that provides specialist clinical nursing support, advice and education to patients and their families. You will work as an effective team member and demonstrate excellent communication skills between the multidisciplinary teams both in the hospital and wider community.

You will be adaptable and flexible in order to meet the challenges that this role demands and you will have evidence of recent diabetes clinical practice and experience.

You will be part of the weekend rotation to support the provision of Specialist Diabetes Nursing care to hospital inpatients on the Watford site this will include Saturday and Sunday working.

Main duties of the job

The Band 7 Diabetes Specialist Nurse will provide excellent high-quality inpatient and outpatient care across our sites.

Work as an integral member of our diabetes team.

Actively participate in face-to-face nurse led and complex MDT, Young Adult, Antenatal and Insulin Pump outpatient clinics.

Initiate and titrate new therapies and initiate and support patients with new diabetes technologies including Insulin Pumps.

Participate in nurse led telephone and email clinics.

Provide skilled assessment, planning, delivery and evaluation of care within defined guidance and protocols.

Participate in Audit and research.

Provide expert specialist diabetes education and advice to nurses and other healthcare disciplines across the trust.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities


The post holder is a recognised expert in diabetes, responsible for assessing, developing and implementing specialist nursing care programmes for patients with diabetes, under the supervision of the Lead Diabetes Specialist Nurse and liaising closely with the wider diabetes MDT including medical staff, dieticians and psychologists.

The post holder will provide specialist diabetes outpatient support for Diabetes Clinics; combined in this post is the care of patients with diabetes on the in-patient wards. Offering support to patients following discharge and liaising closely with colleagues in the community tier of this integrated service and on other hospital sites. 

Supervision of nursing staff and multi-professional education in diabetes care will also form a key part of their role. They will be involved in the development and implementation of clinical protocols and guidelines for inpatients and outpatients with diabetes and will work towards developing a structured approach in diabetes care to ensure a comprehensive high quality diabetes service with the Trust and community tier of the diabetes services. They will be expected to undertake clinical audit and may have an opportunity to undertake research.

Full Time 37.5 hours including being part of the weekend rotation covering both Saturday and Sunday.
