Children's Emergency Department Assistant

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Provide assistance and support to all team members of the multi-disciplinary team (including other Healthcare Assistant, Housekeepers etc), as directed.

Arrange or where necessary scan/prepare notes for patient transfer.

Prompt clinical team for patient discharge and liaise with Patient transport where appropriate.

Organise the transfer of patients to other areas if required.

Communicate with Nursing and Medical staff to update them on completion of tasks or where unable to complete.

Liaise with the Registered Nurse in charge / shift coordinator and resolve issues preventing prompt patient transfer out of ED.

Answer the telephone / greet visitors promptly in a polite and professional manner and deal with enquiries as appropriate, pass on written and verbal information as required to colleagues and patients.

Where required ensure patients and their relatives or carers are kept informed of delays with their treatment/investigations and waiting times.

Communicate effectively with patients and carers, recognising there may be a need to utilise alternative methods of communication. Where there are barriers to understanding, arrange / access information, support and others services to aid effective communication / use of distraction & play therapy.

Ensure children are safeguarded in line with local and national policy

Support main ED during periods of high acuity as needed.

Able to undertake: Phlebotomy, ECG ,Aseptic dressings, Plaster cast application (or willing to undertake training within 6 months) Catheterisation (or willingness to undertaken training within 6 months) Venepuncture and Cannulation (or willingness to undertake training within 6 months) Blood cultures (or willingness to undertake training within 6 months

You will be a Senior Assessor within our multidisciplinary assessment team, delivering:

Remote developmental histories and child observations (via video calls)
Peer MDT diagnostic decision-making, with the support of the senior clinical MDT where required
Tech-enabled outcome report writing
Outcome calls with parents and families (via video call)

As a Senior Assessor, you have the opportunity to focus on delivering direct care. Furthermore, if you have the relevant experience and skills, you can take on an additional responsibility. We limit this to one responsibility to allow for focused time on that topic, rather than having your time stretched too thinly. When taking on an additional responsibility, your case volume is reduced, making time available for this focused time.

For Senior Assessors, additional responsibility options include supporting more complex cases, ensuring quality assurance, providing training, facilitating family engagement, and contributing to pathway development.
