We are seeking a dynamic and enthusiastic Matron to take a key leadership role across all paediatric departments within the Trust with a specialist portfolio which includes Paediatric Ward, CYP Outpatients, CYP Community Nursing team and Asthma and Allergy Clinic.
As a key member of the triumvirate leadership team, you will be passionate about providing the best possible patient care across all areas of responsibility. You will be responsible for ensuring that our patients, families and our staff are at the centre of everything we do, thrive in a multidisciplinary team environment and be committed to the delivery of high quality, safe patient care with excellent outcomes.
Main duties of the job
You will support the Care Group in ensuring there are robust clinical governance and oversight mechanisms in place and work collaboratively with the senior nursing, clinical and operational teams to deliver an extensive recovery programme whilst ensuring safe care and an excellent patient experience. An experienced senior nurse within a children's and young people environment you will also have experience of workforce development and be able to engage staff, children and families in ensuring continuing improvement in the service.
We are particularly interested in hearing from staff with specialist experience in the care and management of children and young people who are keen to be involved in leading the wide-ranging service changes planned in children's services across the acute division leading to significant improvements in care and service delivery for island residents. This diverse and exciting role will provide an excellent steppingstone for advancement and future career development.
As an experienced nurse with a background in a relevant specialty and experience of leading a ward or department, the successful candidate will have the opportunity to play a key role in the development of new pathways working collaboratively with our acute partner, Portsmouth Hospitals University.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities
Matron is responsible for the leadership and management of nursing or midwifery within a defined group of clinical services in a Division. (See diagram) They are a key member of the management team for the Division, working closely with the Head of Nursing for the care group. They have joint responsibility for the effective delivery of quality, financial and operational performance of the service line including ownership of Key Performance Targets and Measures for the service. Service specific aims, objectives and KPI’s will be detailed in each post holder’s personal appraisal.
They are responsible for the delivery of safe, clinically and cost effective and compassionate care within the service providing assurance evidence in this regard to the Divisional Director of Nursing, and Head of Nursing. This includes but is not limited to health care acquired infection, privacy and dignity including single sex accommodation, nutrition, patient involvement and engagement, learning and improving service quality by learning from incidents and complaints.
Matron has professional leadership responsibility for Sisters, Team Leaders and responsibility for the delivery of specialist nursing services within the Acute Division. This responsibility may extend to groups of Allied Health Professionals.
Matron establishes and fosters an effective working relationship with colleagues from the multi-disciplinary team across the services managed within the Acute Division utilising their negotiating and influencing skills to secure and support change and improvement in care, clinical governance and service delivery within their designated portfolio.

- Registered nurse (relevant to the field of practice).
- Live NMC Registration.
- Educated to a bachelor’s degree level in Nursing, Midwifery, Leadership and Management, Allied Health Professional degree or direct experience or transferable education.
- Management Qualification or significant experience in a senior leadership role
- Expert knowledge of nursing practice and understanding of related clinical services providing clinical advice to annual planning and service developments.
- Evidence of a leading role in improving clinical services and delivering the clinical governance agenda.
- Experience of managing a budget and resources.
- Demonstrate a broad understanding of both Care Group and Trust objectives.
