Senior Biomedical Scientist in Immunology

Job overview
We are looking for an enthusiastic, visionary Senior Biomedical Scientist (Band 7) to join our dynamic and thriving team of 9 BMS’s and 4 AHCS’s in our Immunology laboratory. The Immunology service is based at the William Harvey Hospital in Ashford and serves the Kent and Medway Pathology Network (KMPN). We are UKAS ISO 15189; 2022 accredited as are all Pathology disciplines within the organisation. Services provided include autoimmune serology, allergy, protein electrophoresis, specific protein measurement and cryoprotein investigations. The laboratory works closely with our consultant Immunologist supporting allergy and immunology clinics in addition to planning the delivery and development of laboratory services. Immunology has a strong training ethos linked to career development and progression.
Applicants should be effective leaders, have significant Immunology knowledge and experience, and have a good track record of managing staff and laboratory resources. You must be able to demonstrate achievement of targets, of implementing service developments and service transformation initiatives, a high attention to detail and excellent communication skills. The suitable candidate must be HCPC registered and hold a Level 7 qualification in a relevant subject (see JD for more details). If this is you we would love to hear from you!
Main duties of the job
· The post holder will be responsible for a laboratory section and team of Biomedical Scientists and assistant health care scientists and will deliver a medical laboratory service to promote efficient and effective patient care and resource management within the Trust.
· Ensure that the quality of laboratory work is performed to a satisfactory standard at all times and is to a consistently high standard.
· To undertake scientific tasks within all appropriate sections of the department when appropriate, monitoring the performance of Trainee Biomedical Scientists and (S)AHCS.
· To produce timely, accurate and relevant results and reports in accordance with laboratory policies and procedures.
· To undertake routine analytical work involving both automated and manual techniques.
· To make timely and accurate decisions regarding the efficient and safe functioning of the laboratory considering health and safety and other relevant legislation, including supervising and supporting BMSs & AHCSs where needed with decision making.
· Develop and implement systems and procedures within the Department to enable the service to run effectively, and to ensure it complies with legal requirements.
· The postholder will be expected to use initiative in all areas of work.
· The post holder will be responsible for the day-to-day organization and maintenance of work flow within their designated section.

Qualifications and Training
Essential criteria
- Current HCPC Registration.
- Extensive post-qualification experience as a biomedical scientist in a UKAS ISO 15189;2012 accredited Biochemistry laboratory (see Person Spec).
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of formal leadership and/or personnel management training.
- IBMS Certificates in Expert Practice in; Quality Management Training Leadership & Management.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD.
Skills and Experience
Essential criteria
- Perform annual appraisal reviews, assess knowledge and skills framework within the Trusts and professional guidelines.
- Highly developed interpersonal and organisational skills, able to supervise others, offer advice/intervention where appropriate.
- Co-ordinate team/section tasks, convey directions to others via verbal, written and electronic instructions, including complex protocols and procedures.
- Ability to recognise problems and instigate corrective action.
- Flexible and able to adapt and react positively to changing demands and circumstances, participation in flexible working practices if required.
- Sound working knowledge of requirements for day-to-day running of a busy accredited NHS biochemistry laboratory.
- Knowledge of the IS0 15189 standards and their implications for the laboratory quality management system.
Desirable criteria
- Highly developed teaching, training skills.
- Effectively communicate with various grades of staff of differing intellectual abilities and professional backgrounds.
- Teach and assess staff in conjunction with Universities and other educational establishments.
- Excellent technical, analytical, evaluation and interpretational skills.
- Understand general developments in the NHS and how these affect Pathology services generally.
