Consultant Paediatrician

Looking for a role where your impact truly matters? Join our dynamic Community Paediatric team in Bromley—one of London’s greenest, most family-friendly boroughs, with excellent schools, strong transport links, and easy access to central London and Kent.

We are seeking a motivated Consultant to help deliver high-quality care for children and families. You’ll join an experienced, supportive team providing a full range of community paediatric services, with a focus on neurodevelopment, child development, and safeguarding.

This role offers variety and flexibility. You’ll primarily manage neurodevelopmental referrals and health assessments for Children Looked After, with scope to shape your job plan around your specialist interests. You will also contribute to child protection work (physical abuse only) and work closely with multidisciplinary teams including CAMHS, GPs, and allied professionals.

Based at Phoenix Children’s Resource Centre, you’ll also work across community sites in Bromley. With rising demand in ASD, ADHD, and complex neurodisability, you’ll help drive service innovation and improve access for families.

No on-call commitments. Part-time (7.5 PAs), with flexibility for full or less-than-full-time applicants.

 

 
 
 

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be mainly expected to see referrals with neuro-developmental concerns but there would be flexibility in the job plan to accommodate candidate’s other special interests.

 

The post holder will be required to do child protection work pro-rata (physical abuse only). 

 

The post does not have out-of-hours on-call commitments. This is a part time (7.5 PAs) post, but we would welcome applicants who might wish to work full time or less than full time, as the need arises.

Professional Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • MRCPCH by examination or equivalent.
  • Full GMC registration, and License to Practise in the UK
  • Must be on the GMC’s Specialist Register OR within six months of CCT or equivalent in Community Child Health, Community Paediatrics/ Neurodisability or General Paediatrics at time of scheduled interview.
  • Portfolio Pathway (formerly CESR) applicants must be on the Specialist Register at the point of application.
Desirable criteria
  • Higher degree, e.g. MD, PhD in Paediatrics, MSc (Community Paediatrics) or similar
  • Registered special interest in other Paediatric fields

Training and Clinical Experience

Essential criteria
  • Applicant is able to demonstrate having achieved the competencies equivalent to the Highest Specialist Paediatric Training.
  • Valid Level 3 Safeguarding Training
  • Valid BLS Training
  • Evidence of participation in clinical audit/QI project, understanding the role of these in improving the medical practice
  • Experience and knowledge of critical appraisal of evidence, so as to improve clinical outcomes
  • Willingness to teach all grades of professional multidisciplinary staff and medical students
  • Wide experience in General Paediatrics with specialist knowledge of Community Child Health
  • Specialist knowledge of the range of Neurodevelopmental disorders and management of complex medical problems in community settings
  • Experience in the diagnosis and management of ADHD /Autism Spectrum Disorder, and identifying comorbidities or coexisting conditions
  • Training and experience in the identification and management of suspected child abuse
  • Knowledge of 0-25 SEND Code of Practice and Children and Families Act 2014
  • Knowledge of the current NHS changes and their significance for working with primary care
Desirable criteria
  • Experience working in NHS
  • Wider experience, research, and training, in providing subspecialty service (Community Child Health)
  • Research degree. ‘Training the Trainers’ certification
  • Evidence of leading Qi projects
  • Experience of managing CYP with complex ASD /ADHD
  • Valid APLS and NLS

Knowledge and Personal Skills

Essential criteria
  • Willing to work unsupervised and make decisions
  • Excellent written and communication skills, including communicating bad news
  • Ability to communicate effectively with patients, their relatives, colleagues, managers, other agencies, and staff at all levels
