Job overview
The Anaesthetic & Intensive Care Unit at the Kent & Canterbury Hospital is looking to recruit dynamic and forward-thinking individual to join our team of dedicated clinicians.
Our hospital undertakes all vascular surgery for East Kent, urological (including major cancer and robotic surgery) and elective orthopaedic surgery. A range of day surgical specialties are also represented, including: dental and maxillofacial surgery, ENT, general surgery (including paediatrics), ophthalmology, Interventional Radiology, MRI and endoscopy.
Emergency theatre cover is provided daily. Regional anaesthesia plays a major part in our service and we support sustainable anaesthetic principles - Kent & Canterbury Hospital provides critical care services in a six bedded Critical Care Unit and a four bedded, mainly post-surgical, HDU supported by dedicated Intensive Care Clinicians and Anaesthetists.
The Anaesthetic department and the Intensive Care Unit at Kent & Canterbury Hospital are active in education, audit and research.
Main duties of the job
This post is for a Locum Consultant Anaesthetist and Intensivist and will be based at Kent & Canterbury Hospital. The successful candidate will be responsible for delivering anaesthesia sessions with on-call commitments, with a requirement to cover ITU. Job plans within the department are flexible.
With this 11 PA position, there is 1 PA allocation for SPA.
It is anticipated that this job plan will include cover for paediatrics, vascular, endovascular, orthopaedic and urology lists, however, the job plan can be honed to reflect individual skills, knowledge and experience.

Qualifications and training
Essential criteria
- Medical degree
- FRCA or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- CCT/CESR Specialist Registration or will obtain within 6 months of interview date
- Minimum of English Level 2 (GCSE grade C or equivalent), ILETS, or graduate of a UK Medical School
Desirable criteria
- Post graduate qualification – clinical/education
- Fellowship in airway/regional anaesthesia/Paediatric anaesthesia
- FFICM
- EDIC
Skills and experience
Essential criteria
- Wide knowledge and experience of caring for critically ill adults
- Wide experience of anaesthesia
- Previous NHS experience
- Experience of teaching
- Audit participation
- ITU patient management experience
- Complex vascular anaesthesia experience
Desirable criteria
- Critical care and/or anaesthesia publications or presentations
Clinical governance
Essential criteria
- Experience of morbidity and mortality review
- Evidence of audit of own practice
Desirable criteria
- Structured Judgment Review training
- Leadership management course
