Job overview
We are looking for experienced, enthusiastic and motivated applicants for a Senior Biomedical Scientist in Haemophilia (Band 7), working part-time 22.5 hours per week, and fixed term contract for 12 months. This role in the Haemophilia laboratory, is specifically to support implementation of the new Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS), which is a clinical priority for Pathology at EKHUFT. In this post we can offer you a rewarding, flexible and supportive role, providing a wide scope of haemostasis and thrombosis diagnostic services, using up to date and innovative technology.
You will be joining our team of experienced and dedicated Biomedical Scientists, where you will have the opportunity to work closely with our medical team in the Kent Haemophilia and Thrombosis Comprehensive Care Centre, supporting the operational delivery, training of staff of all grades, informing method development, developing clinical guidelines and potentially taking part in clinical research activities.

Main duties of the job
The Senior BMS role will be a conduit between the scientific and clinical sides of the service, undertaking laboratory and clinical duty sessions, providing clinical liaison as needed. The post holder will provide technical, managerial and leadership expertise. They will be a key contributor to quality management and improvement, the training of all the departments scientists, and the verification and implementation of new methodologies.

We have an extensive repertoire and scope of practice, using the latest high-quality innovation and technology, for instance STA-R Max analysers, Ceveron S100, PFA-200, PAP-8 Platelet Aggregometer, Glomax luminometer, Dynex DS2 automated ELISA analyser and the GeneXpert.
The successful candidate should have a high level of analytical and technical skill, including statistical analysis. They should have considerable and up to date knowledge of current practices and advances in Haematology, with specific experience in Haemostasis and Thrombosis desirable.

Qualifications and training
Essential criteria
- HCPC Registration.
- Masters level (Level 7) qualification in a relevant subject; Master of Science degree IBMS Higher Specialist Diploma IBMS Fellowship examination 120 credits in postgraduate qualification in relevant subjects. Or proven equivalent level of knowledge, e.g. clear relevant and demonstrable experience and evidence of operating at Band 7 level.
Desirable criteria
- Evidence of management training.
- Post-graduate courses relevant to Haematology or Haemostasis and Thrombosis.
- IBMS Certificates of Expert Practice, e.g. in Quality Management, Training or Leadership & Management.
Skills and experience
Essential criteria
- Extensive post registration experience of working in an ISO 15189 accredited laboratory.
- Highly developed technical and analytical skills.
- Supervisory and leadership skills and ability to train other staff.
- Good oral and written communication skills.
- Evidence of participation in CPD.
- Knowledge and experience of implementing new techniques and methodologies.
- Highly developed IT skills and conversant with Microsoft word, Excel, PowerPoint, and statistical analysis software.
- Ability to interpret complex information including charts, statistical data and figures.
Desirable criteria
- Highly developed teaching and training skills.
- Experience of working in a Haemostasis and Thrombosis Laboratory or section within a Laboratory.
Knowledge
Essential criteria
- A comprehensive and up to date knowledge of current practices and advances in Haematology, including in Haemostasis and Thrombosis.
- A good understanding of quality management systems, accreditation and knowledge of quality standards.
- Health and safety awareness.
- Risk management awareness.
- An understanding of current developments in the NHS and how these affect Pathology services.
Desirable criteria
- Specialised knowledge of Haemostasis and Thrombosis.
- Detailed knowledge of UKAS Accreditation, ISO 15189 standards and other quality management systems and processes.
- Evidence of ongoing CPD.
