This is an exciting role offering an experienced midwife the opportunity to impart their skills and knowledge to others, inspiring the next generation of midwives.

The post holder will be involved in the designing, implementation and delivery of education to all members of the maternity multi-professional team. This role has a significant focus on the support of newly qualified midwives throughout the preceptorship period, as well as the retention of all staff and recruitment of midwives to the maternity unit. 

The post holder will be part of the Maternity Education Team who work cohesively to develop and support the multi-professional team within maternity. The team work collaboratively to support and develop staff, as well as having close working relationships with the wider maternity teams such as risk and governance, to generate improvements in services and outcomes for women and their families.

Key Responsibilities:                        

Ø  The post holder will liaise and work in close conjunction with the Lead Midwife for Education, Consultant Midwives, Link Lecturers from the University and Practice Development Midwives in order to achieve the following requirements and outcomes.

Ø  To provide clinical and educational support for all staff, with an emphasis on developing and facilitating a structured period of preceptorship, so that newly qualified midwives are given opportunities and appropriate preceptorship to enable them to develop their confidence as an independent practitioner, and refine their skills, values, and behaviours in all care settings.

Ø  Maintain current high-level midwifery skills in all areas of maternity care to support midwives to facilitate and conduct a physiological birth. They are also required to be part of the staffing escalation process when required.

Ø  Be innovative and creative when determining strategies to improve quality of care and embed evidence-based practice into training.

Ø  Monitor changes to midwifery practice and preceptorship nationally and advise the senior midwifery team and maternity education team accordingly.

Ø  Expert clinical skills to support midwives who require additional support and development and utilise appropriate strategies to maximise development opportunities.

Ø  Can work under pressure and always maintain excellent clinical judgment and professionalism.

Ø  Ensure proactive cascade of learning from incidents and complaints as an essential element of the education pathway.

Ø  Attend any meetings appropriate to the post holder’s area/role, ensuring effective communication within the team and leading on actions to be undertaken and applications of recommendations into the training and education programmes.

Ø  Evaluate and audit training delivery by the team and make necessary changes following evidence based educational models.

Ø  Support in situ “live drills” of maternity emergencies in partnership with colleagues within the maternity education team, wider clinical education team, obstetricians, anaesthetists and audit the response for future learning development. Where appropriate negotiate the implementation of changes as identified during “live drill” audits.

Ø  To work collaboratively with other professional groups working clinically and maximising development opportunities and inter-professional learning opportunities.

Ø  Utilise opportunities to facilitate learning and reflection within the clinical area, to support the development of midwifery practice and new roles within the service.

Ø  Work collaboratively across the Local Maternity System and share good practices and innovations with colleagues locally and nationally.

Ø  Be able to deal with staff and clients in emotionally difficult situations. Take appropriate action when confronted by aggressive clients/relatives. This will require managing a highly emotive atmosphere.

Ø  Support midwives implementing improvement in practice and thus demonstrate responsiveness to the needs of the healthcare environment, and commitment to quality improvement. The post holder will work closely with colleagues in the education team to collaborate and embed learning objectives/action plans for midwives in the process of managing high performance.

Ø  Participate in maternity education training including PROMPT/ NLS/BLS and additional training for staff to maintain competence in the maternity unit.

Ø  Be able to maintain moderate physical effort the duration of the period of duty to the clinical area. This may involve standing for long periods, walking, kneeling, and bending to provide care for women in labour.

Ø  Support midwives to work in partnership with birthing people to develop plans of care, which meet their individual needs, to listen to them and to advocate for them as required

Ø  To line manage the NQM and co-ordinate their progress throughout their preceptorship, complete all Trust on boarding process.

Ø  To maintain accurate records of the progress of preceptee’ s throughout their preceptorship programme, including managerial conversations in line with the Trust Policy.

Ø  Ability to participate in the manager on call rota

Fulfil expectations of a Band 7 leader within the wider maternity management to support sickness/conduct and professionalism with collaboration with Employee Relations in line with the Trust Policy.
