We are recruiting for Phlebotomist who share our ambition and vision to deliver the Best of Care by the Best People and has the drive to take us forward, by ensuring that the Trust continues to be the first choice for patients and our staff.

Main duties of the job

To safely and efficiently perform venepuncture on all patients requiring blood tests as per the Phlebotomy standard operating procedure (SOP) at Medway Maritime Hospital, Sheppey Community Hospital or anywhere else required by the Phlebotomy management team.

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

Responsible to perform venepuncture on patients in the inpatient and outpatient setting, preparing patients for venepuncture, ensuring they are given the opportunity to discuss their concerns and individual needs

Observe and report any side effects or untoward incidents which may result of the venepuncture procedure relating to the patient or the Phlebotomist

Adhere to all trust policies in relation to taking bloods samples from patients ensuring a high standard of service and patient care at all times. This includes correct labelling and safe disposal of the equipment used, ensuring you deliver blood samples to the appropriate laboratories safely and within time limitations

Treat all with dignity and respect whilst promoting a safe clinical environment for all patients, visitors, and staff

Be aware of and adhere to all hospital policies and procedures and collaborate with other health care professional to ensure that these are observed

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • NVQ Level 3 in Healthcare/health sciences or equivalent experience (preferred) GCSE Maths and English

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Knowledge of a healthcare setting and background
Desirable criteria
  • Knowledge in obtaining a blood sample and other phlebotomy techniques

Experience

Desirable criteria
  • At least one years’ experience of taking blood samples in a clinical setting

  • Give an example of a time where you have demonstrated a ‘can do’ attitude (including the situation you were in) and the outcome

Skills

Essential criteria
  • Able to provide and receive information, and relay tests to clinicians and other staff
  • Ability to work within a team or individually
