Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • The Clinical Trust Fellow is responsible for all the patients under the care of the Consultant Surgeon(s) to whose firm he/she is attached at the time and for the patients of all the Consultant Surgeons when 'on-call' and when covering for his/her colleagues.
  • He/she will refer to his/her consultant when problems exceed his authority and experience and he/she will support and advise the House Surgeon who will refer to him/her.
  • He/she must maintain liaison between other Fellows who are on duty before and after him/her to maintain adequate continuity and communication of patient care. 
  • He/she is responsible for arranging the patients' care, ordering their treatment and investigations. 
  • He/she will instruct the nursing staff in the care of patients.  
  • He/she will instruct the technical and professional staff in the investigations that are necessary for patient care, taking care to make sure other departments are fully informed of all necessary information.

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Primary Medical Degree (MBBS or equivalent)
  • Full GMC Registration with a licence to Practise
  • MRCS must be passed and completed.
  • ALS
Desirable criteria
  • ATLS
  • PALS

Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Broadly based Medical & Surgical experience
  • Understanding of audit

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Minimum of one year’s full time hospital service in CT equivalent (or higher grades) since first obtaining full registration in Accident & Emergency and/or Surgical Setting (Desirable)

  • Sufficient communication, professional and personal skills to effectively undertake the role of middle grade doctor.
  • Computer literate for communication and audit purposes
  • Good team working skills.
