Job overview
Applications are invited for a twelve month fixed term Oculoplastic fellow post that will enhance the service of our large department that covers a population of approximately 1.2 million. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with three Oculoplastic consultants across both main Trust sites. The post has been in place for over 15 years and offers an excellent and varied timetable. It is not a Deanery recognised training post.
The successful candidate will join an active Oculoplastic service which covers all subspecialty conditions including lid malpositions, lacrimal disorders, periocular tumours and orbital disease, with dedicated thyroid eye disease clinics. All oculoplastic surgical areas are covered, including joint lacrimal clinic and theatre lists with ENT, apart from orbital surgery which is referred to tertiary referral centres. We are also developing a facial skin cancer pathway with ENT and a joint operating list with general Plastics. The team comprises 3 Oculoplastic consultants, an Oculoplastic fellow (this post) and an Oculoplastic nurse specialist.
Main duties of the job
The post is based at Maidstone & Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust (MTW). MTW is responsible for the provision of ophthalmology services for the people of North, Mid and West Kent. General and sub-specialty ophthalmology services are provided at the Eye, Ear, and Mouth Unit (EEMU), a modern, purpose-built facility attached to Maidstone Hospital, with further outpatient facilities provided at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital at Pembury, Medway Maritime Hospital and Sevenoaks Hospital in a “hub and spoke” model. The post-holder will have timetables with sessions at Maidstone and other sites.

Teaching and CPD
Essential criteria
- Experience of teaching doctors in training and other clinical staff
- Evidence of participation in CME/CPD in the last 12 months
Desirable criteria
- Maintenance of a CPD diary or portfolio
- Teaching experience
Qualifiactions
Essential criteria
- Full and Specialist registration (with a licence to practise) with the General Medical Council (GMC), or be eligible for registration within six months of interview
- FRCOphth or equivalent
Desirable criteria
- MD/ other higher degree
- Experience in Oculoplastic subspecialty training
- Publications and poster and oral presentations in oculoplastics and orbits
Clinical experience
Essential criteria
- Completion of core training in ophthalmology
- Experience in managing general ophthalmic emergencies
- Good basic knowledge of oculoplastic surgery
- Demonstrable experience in clinical audit and/or research
- Evidence of competence in contemporary management strategies in oculoplastic surgery
- Ability to audit clinical result
Desirable criteria
- Research interest / published papers
- Appropriate exposure to oculoplastic/adnexal surgery at ST5+ level or equivalent
- Appropriate experience in related specialties
- Able to perform routine minor oculoplastics procedures independently e.g. lid lesion excisions, tarsorrhaphy with logbook evidence of numbers
