Specialty Urology Doctor

NHS Medical & Dental: Specialty Doctor

Job overview

This is a unique opportunity for a trainee or established middle-grade Urological Surgeon to join the team at Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells NHS Trust. This one-year whole-time appointment is based primarily at Maidstone Hospital. Still, work will also be undertaken at the Tunbridge Wells Hospital, Pembury or at other sites within the Trust. The post-holder will function at a middle-grade level. The post-holder will participate in the urology middle grade registrar of the week on call (1:8) rota. This post could potentially suit a trainee Urologist at the end of their specialist registrar training, an established middle grade, or before being appointed to a urology rotation.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will be required to perform additional duties in occasional emergencies and unforeseen circumstances, and to be available for such irregular outside normal rota duties. The post holder will be required to deputise from time to time for absent colleagues. The post holder will be required to be involved in continual professional development. There is a weekly MDM meeting and preceding this a dedicatedbleep-free one-hour consultant-led teaching session aiming to cover the core curriculum for FRCS (Urol). The appointee will be encouraged to attend clinics, operating sessions and ward rounds of surgeons other than those to whom he/she is responsible if this is in the interest of training

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

The weekly timetable will include time in the operating theatre, outpatient clinics, and flexible cystoscopy clinic, with adequate administration and SPA time allocated. You will be required to see new and old patients in the outpatient clinics, perform unsupervised flexible cystoscopy lists, and be involved with the emergency on-call rota at a middle-grade level. The post holder will be required to have a close relationship with the staff on the wards, including the intensive care unit, the theatre and nursing staff and other professional and technical staff. The successful candidate will need to demonstrate some flexibility to cover middle-grade leave. The post holder will be required to participate in data collection and audit. Flexibility in the weekly work pattern is essential given the varying demands upon the service, and will be allocated, given the successful candidate’s level of experience, to best address the needs of the department. The PAs consist of 8 working PAS, 1 SPA and 3 On Call PAS. This, however, er is not definitive and will be discussed with the successful candidate.
